bernd -> New Oscar Herrero Flamenco Metronome (Oct. 4 2014 15:37:49)
I´ve just got Oscar´s latest newsletter presenting is Flamencómetro. He promises a real sound made in studio, all compases and around 200 rhythms and different sounds like apregios, scales etc., all in tab.
According to the presentation, this web software will revolutionize learning flamenco guitar. The flamencómetro in deed offers lots of options. To be honest I´m disappointed by the "real sounds" working just on Midi producing an artificial sterilized plastical sound that makes no fun to play with. The palmas have no soul, the bass tones doesn´t provide a deep full "boom" but sound very flat, just far away from any impusivity as it is expected in flamenco.
The presentation is guided by Oscar himself. He better should have commited someone else with a more spirited behaviour. While watching the presentation I almost fell asleep.
So imho the better choice probably is the Gerhard Graf-Martinez Flamenco Percusión. It is a stand-alone solution running on Ipad, Mac or PC without internet connection providing really absolut natural alive sounds when using the project files containing the natural sounds. Regarding to long time use it sould be much cheaper instead of account membership based on time on a webserver.

Do you think that's a better choice than Doctor Compas? If so, why?

I wouldn't bother with the Graf martinez percussion pack Another bit of dormant software .. No better than OH .. Same As GG States they are 'virtual software' instruments The sounds are very 'software' and sound atrocious if you try to slow down ie tangos to Tientos tempo Much easier importing an MP3 into garage band on your iPad than messing around with midi sounds
I checked the New OH site and became very disengaged And yes I spent a weeks rent on one of his metronomes that is basically a doorstop now ( his instructional videos are certainly very helpful ) In some ways the new Metro seems to detract from actual practice
After a few years of spending money on these things I've come to these conclusions For practice FOOT - keeps it real and internal A basic metronome ... just a simple click .. And count if you need Or dr compas for some practice groove though prefer 'loops' over what sounds like Ducks for palmas ( my kids observation ) But a universal and standard tool now Great development when it came out .. Is their an android/PC version yet for those users ? (Pretty much the reason I went total Apple was over a $20 app) And you can record if you need ..
The compas builder on the left is pretty Damn good for programming Much better sounds than either OH or GG ( no comparison really ) and easy to programe and create loops., I use this still for home recording Pricey but probably worth the disappointment in the other options By far leagues ahead as far as programmable software goes .. Question is 'do you need it?' The CB phone app is utter crap
Solo compas and an audio programe that can alter tempo is also a good option

Yes, good advice.

On my pc speakers the GG tracks doesnt sound worse than those of OH. But what GG did was to produce percussion sounds as project files that were recorded naturally and organized to replace the artificial midi sounds into the recorded natural sounds. For this specific natural sound you have to buy these project files EXTRA. So you didn´t any of these modified midi sounds. Around the begining of this year I phone with GG, because I haven´t understood what is needed for what. So he explanied it. He also told me that many studios use his project files because of the non-artificial midi sounds.
Regarding Dr Compás and some likewise metronomes, I don´t use neither a smart phone nor an iPad. I prefer software running on my own pc without any web based accounts just as stand-alone versions.
Even Ron´s Flamenco Master sounds better than OH´s online version, but ok, that´s really not compareable to the complexity of OH´s Flamencómetro.

Solo compas CD
Play back from 30 to 200 percent speed on vlc media player.
Even better play along with the original recording of a piece you are learning in super slomo.
VLC does this perfectly well for free but I am sure some would prefer to explore more expensive and pointless options.

I like having a metronome that counts 12 when I'm trying to make up new remates and falsetas.

OK sure, but that is really all that is needed and WeirdMetronome does that for free, it sounds pretty poor but its a metronome.
If you want something that sounds good-ish then pick a track from a solo compas cd and play along with it.
To quote Louis Armstrong if you need to count then you are lost already. This is always worth remembering.

In a perfect world .. True Guess he only had to count 2 & 4 so Leandor has a strong case there
Bernd I forgot about the extra package The one that imports to the DM package ? Have that as well Still an improvement but those sounds .. Still on par with the OH phone app IMO But take the point on the stand alone aspect Man I spent way too much cash on all this It would be interesting to know which studios use this The total of the GG package would come close to compas builder .. Which has alot more going for it me thinks ( btw no affiliation there just found it the most workable program )
All courses for horses I'll try to upload audio of all these later this eve and post a link here As a comparison for future consumers Might have some use
Finally I do find numbers flicking past unhelpful in the real world Reminds me of a discussion a dancer and I had about installing a green stage light that would go on as a cue for the singer we were working with

32 bars in most songs that's quite a lot of 2's and 4's.
The Solo Compas tracks all go to twelve. But you need to listen for it.
If someone is enjoying whatever widgit I don't mean to rain on their parade. But I grew up poor and I simply hate to see a novelty product sold as an essential. I get the same feeling in bike shops when I hear a salesman hard-selling gel filled saddles and other rubbish. Sometimes the item in question will just be useless and other times it will get in the way. But there is a third option that it will be part of the excuse not to start cycling in earnest until you have bought one. And that is the one that concerns me most.
I had a niece who wouldn't sing unless it was through a karaoke machine mic with reverb. And I've lost count of the amount of people I know who start running get a little ache spend a hundred pounds on a pair of trainers and then stop running.
I know it isn't fashionable to be upset about rampant consumerism, it's one of the real big differences between a hippie and a hipster. I don't see this as progress.
Machines don't make music people do. Machines make noise, at least the click of a metronome is honest, and if you put it down slow enough everyone can hear exactly where they are stumbling.

the show tunes .. Things seemed easy then 16 .. 32 bar structures I guess the flamenco phrase just seems longer often find myself counting compasses when learning a 'rehearsed' choreography .. At least until it becomes natural ..it's the improvised parts that come easier for me Oddly I did a braz/jazz type gig last night Seemed the form/harmony was much easier to memorize after the first 'round' of the chart Functional movement with maybe the odd quirky two five but all centred around tonic to dominant movement and back again Somewhere in the middle of each chart there is the five one signpost .. Regardless of the modulations and moves Kept waiting for something to happen Flamenco seems to have a much different thing going on that weaves a different aural spell Music just ain't the same anymore without llamadas, remates .. And wise words on the marketing Wish I heard it earlier on this journey Flamenco seems well targeted It's the innate consumer in me which I'm slowly leaving behind That false sense that this is a must have to improve what is there all along I'm also amused that things have returned to a simple pulse Just feeling it .. I get enough feedback if its 'out' and corrections seem less problematic as time goes on
The joy of actually working with humans
Or trusting the inner judgement .. Or the outer sole of my shoe To feel things with out the lights, flashing numbers, computer screens and compas infringement notices ... All part of a process Keeping things portable and pragmatic
