quote:
Doc Watson is a name that I heard a lot over the years by Bluegrass pickers. Doc Watson was an American original and truly one of the greats of Bluegrass and Country music. His actual name was Arthel Watson, but his Christian name, Arthel, was so odd that someone suggested he be called "Doc," presumably after Sherlock Holmes's sidekick Doctor Watson. Among the old-timers like Doc Watson, even going back further than Willie Nelson (who as been around for fifty years), the only one still performing on the circuit is Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys. Ralph Stanley and his brother Carter formed the Clinch Mountain Boys in 1946 and performed together until Carter's death in 1966. Since then, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys have been on the road continuously. In fact, they are performing at a couple of venues in the Washington, DC area this month. These old-timers were great. I never get tired of listening to them. Bill
