Never heard of Stafford before. There's a good shot of the headstock on his guitar at 2:59-3:01. Never saw one like it.

Later on there is an exhibition of thumb-over-the-top left hand technique on a wide neck.

Even sizzling nylon-string-with-a pick technique like his gets relegated to a comedy act on country music TV.

Great serious country artists like Doc Watson tend to play steel string. Willie is an outlaw exception.

Doc was another singer with an authentic accent. My Chowan County, North Carolina cousins sound more like the Tidewater Virginians their ancestors were. Doc's accent puts him squarely in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills up by the Virginia/North Carolina/Tennessee border.

What a wonderful man he was.

Doc Watson is a name that I heard a lot over the years by Bluegrass pickers.

So, I went and checked out his "Black Mountain Rag" on youtube at your recommendation. Low and behold! He is a marvel with a pick and steel string dreadnaught.

Doc Watson was an American original and truly one of the greats of Bluegrass and Country music. His actual name was Arthel Watson, but his Christian name, Arthel, was so odd that someone suggested he be called "Doc," presumably after Sherlock Holmes's sidekick Doctor Watson.

Among the old-timers like Doc Watson, even going back further than Willie Nelson (who as been around for fifty years), the only one still performing on the circuit is Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys. Ralph Stanley and his brother Carter formed the Clinch Mountain Boys in 1946 and performed together until Carter's death in 1966. Since then, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys have been on the road continuously. In fact, they are performing at a couple of venues in the Washington, DC area this month.

These old-timers were great. I never get tired of listening to them.
