A lot of dancers do make faces, Like furrowing their brows, and looks of constipation?

por medio -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 2:05:16)

It's a serious business, dancing you know.

Leñador -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 3:13:47)

Hahahaha I just got done with 4 hours of dance classes today, what's funny to me is the range of faces. There's the "something smells offensive" face and the "Daddy didn't buy me a pony" face and the most intense, the "i'm gonna chop your bullocks off" face. I'm a fan of the "something smells" face……When I play I have the "Dude, I'm so high" blank stare face.

Miguel de Maria -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 3:24:37)

Priceless :)

estebanana -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 3:25:01)

I love the "I'm angry at the floor" just before furious foot work ensues.
You know when a dancer looks down at the floor with a look of pure distain and then attacks it.
______

But lest we forget the guitarists, many tocaores make the "I have a full pants load of dookie in my underwear and I am not happy about it" look.

Leñador -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 3:34:44)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I probably get the dookie face when i'm playing solo lol

estebanana -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 4:22:18)

I was at a show a few years ago and after a dancer had done an escobilla the innocent little girl next to me leaned over to her mom and said:

"Mommy why is that woman mad at the floor?"

Oh that was priceless.

Grisha -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 4:54:40)

Making faces actually helps me play the guitar. Could it be the same with dance?

LOLOL
In all seriousness and for anyone who doesn't know (not anyone in the thread yet) dancer really do work on their "flamenco face". At least here in the states. It's something I've heard from more then one teacher, "Ok good, but work on your face." and when all the little dance girls get together they talk about how to do their flamenco face and who's looks funny and who has a good one etc… It's not something that comes naturally for them or helps them, it's something they consciously work on to add effect to the dance…..

Now, back to making fun of dancers lololol

estebanana -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 5:39:28)

Seriously speaking, in dance the dancers choreograph the whole body, including the face. It's part of the dance. Sometimes the face might not be a good face because it can be overdone.

I've seen dancers rehearse with and without using the face. And also standing before a mirror working out facial gestures to go with certain moves. But sometimes they go too far. And sometimes it is more natural and less put on. I like it more natural, but think of flamenco without the face as part of the expressive tool box of a dancer. Not much fun.

I've watched my lady do this, she hates when I catch her lolololol

What do you expect ?

a dumb smiling face to a Seguiriyas ?

edguerin -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 8:56:30)

Pedro Bacan was well known for his grimacing
(Apart from that it's a great bulerias)

annemarie -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 9:44:51)

And sometimes dancing just honestly hurts, too [:@]

There's more to flamenco then seguiriyas u know. Let's talk tangos, alegrias, fandangos, bulerias? and smiling don't have to be dumb.

for sure not ! ....but depends on the context

Miguel de Maria -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 14 2014 19:38:42)

I had heard Julian Bream was once reviewed by the New York Time, the critique a single line: "Lute music, with faces." Oh the joys of being a prominent critic!

She's not angry at the floor. She's angry at you and taking it out on the floor. Then she'll be OK until the next time you p1ss her off. Just be grateful she's not stomping on you![:D]

On the other hand, a certain sexual sadomasochistic personality might enjoy that!

Nothing wrong with a little "facial assistance", so to speak!

Not like this though...

....that would just be wrong! [8D]

maybe they ARE constipated?...

expression should come naturally, you either have the passion within or you dont, others fake it and it looks like...well you know

Leñador -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 17 2014 14:21:02)

For guitarists I agree, but dancers have to do it. They're entire purpose is to be visually entertaining.

kenjo138 -> RE: Why do dancers make faces when they dance? (Sep. 18 2014 6:23:28)

Is this a serious question? Dancers typically interpret the pain, sorrow, anger or grief of the words or letra from the singer or cantaor in certain palos. The problem I see is when some dancers have no idea what is being sung and just make potty faces all day long. In that case they should just be more natural.
