MauiFlamenco -> Flamenco peg handle extension (Sep. 1 2014 18:21:14)

Saw a luthier tune his pegheads with an extension handle. It looked like a wooden block that fit over the wings of the pegs. Does anyone know how to make one or buy them? Tuning with thumb and fingers makes my thumb hurt sometimes.
Thought I would check into it.

did the tool look like this? it is a peg wrench. you can buy one at international violin for about $7 or so.

Hi Abe!

It is probably a string winder.......you can get it in every music shop.

I remember seeing wannabe lute players during the early music craze of the late 1960s and 1970s wrestling with all kinds of ridiculous devices like this thing in desperately feeble attempts to tune instruments with poorly fitted pegs and improperly installed strings.
Properly fitted pegs shouldn't need a "wrench" or any other silly-assed contraption to tune with them.
Perhaps the luthier mentioned by MauiFlamenco just doesn't know how to fit them properly.
Take your guitar to a good violin shop and have them fitted correctly. They can be a pleasure to use.
Something like this can be useful in the shop for turning small or otherwise difficult to hold pegs when using a a peg shaper but for tuning such a thing shouldn't be necessary.

charles, the wrench i posted is for the shop. i also concur with your advice about taking the guitar to a violin shop. violin folks do pegs everyday whereas few guitar people do pegs. years ago i took your advice posted at g.s.i. and took my ramirez flamenco to a violin shop in skokie illinois. the cost back then was $125 to have new pegs and a ream job.

You dont need such an advice. You need some proper peg dope or maybe to get the instrument looked after.

If you use such a thing, there´s a good chance you´ll destroy the peg. The head might fall off.

If you use pegs, try to understand what its is and accept that if you have to use force, then its not the peg, that is wrong. Its you who havent learned to deal with it. So learn. If not, better use a guitar with machine heads.
