Ahmed Flamenco -> How can I make the 7 top braces? (Aug. 3 2014 15:26:07)

I wanna make the braces to get the best flamenco sound that can be achieved so what should be their length, thickness and shape?

Length: enough to provide adequate - but not too much - stiffness
Thickness: enough to provide adequate - but not too much - stiffness
Shape: see above

I suggest you to buy a guitar plan and to follow it at your best.
The most common plans are re: Barbero, Hernandez and Reyes.
The best sources I know are the website of Roy Courtnall and luth.org.

Where?

It's probably a language thing but I think Andy just meant same as above.

If you have not built a guitar before I would also suggest you get a plan and follow it.

Basically Andy is saying that the braces need to be light enough yet stiff enough to keep the top from caving in! Only experience can teach you this and you have to build many guitars to reach that point. Even after that there is still much, much more to learn.

I suggest this too. Go with the Hernandez or Reyes as they are both 7 top braces. The Barbero is a 5 but an excellent plan as well. A lot of guitar building is intuitive. The more you build the more you'll be able to understand length and thickness of braces and how they relate to your top, better.

Sorry, I was being cheeky. SEden got the idea.

The first thing to understand is that the braces, the top, and the bridge are all glued together so they function as one unit. The braces themselves don't have a flamenco sound, they just create certain stiffness gradients on the top.

In other words, don't worry about the bracing pattern too much, just get a plan and focus on top thickness more (I would say). Good luck!

When someone asked Abraham Lincoln how long a man's legs should be, he answered: "Long enough to reach from his body to the ground." A similar answer should apply here, because the dimensions of the fan braces would depend on the dimensions of the top, including how it is thicknessed.
