Ahmed Flamenco -> difference in length between 1st and 6th strings? (Aug. 3 2014 15:22:21)

For a 650 mm string length guitar what should be the 1st and 6th strings lengths?

Sr. Martins -> RE: difference in length between 1st and 6th strings? (Aug. 3 2014 15:23:49)

Enough?

As you can see in any guitar the 6th string is a little bit taller than the 1st string and I wanna know by how much exactly

You mean longer? I think it's about 2mm max but some are straight from 6th to 1st.

Some are longer some are not. Its all about compensation and even then you will probably not get the same answer from every guitar builder. I like to use a flat 1.5mm extra in string length.

I think it is needed a lot more on steel strung instruments where the difference in string thickness is greater.

So do you think I should make 1st 650mm and 6th 651.5mm?

No. That's not enough compensation on the trebles, even if you've taken .5 or .75 mm off the nut end of the fingerboard (which I do).

Better to do 651.5 on both ends, or 651.5 to 652, something like that.

So?

I think what your not understanding in regards to guitar building in general is:
A) it's not an exact perfect science.
B) nearly every builder does it differently.

Ask 100 luthiers and you'll get 150 answers....

Not necessarily. I have made some guitars with bridge saddles slanted so that the 6th string is about 2 mm longer than the first string. I didn't think it was an improvement over having them the same length.

Note that since the string spread is greater at the bridge than at the nut, there are at least three string lengths even without tilting the saddle.
