I've just found an article in El Diario de Cadiz about a new documentary shot by Paco's son, Curro.

If you can read Spanish it's here.

Sounds interesting.

Speaking of interesting, I am enjoying your new profile photo. It is inspiring, if not motivating to play more ~grin

I am afraid we will have to just wait for DVD or digital download in the future.

Just curious, but why the excitement over *this* Paco documentary?

I already have two, what's this one offering that might make me want to stick it on my letter to santa?

The fact that Paco is no longer with us...

It is both more "current", and made by his son (a true insider). Who by the way appears to have a very artistic way of directing and filming to boot (if you have seen his other work such as the behind the scenes from his live in Spain disc).. IMO the other two documentaries you refer to have too much of a low budget "home movie" type feel to me, though the material is good.

Ok thanks Ricardo, I haven't seen his son's work. I really enjoyed Light and Shade, though the English voiceover is embarrassing, especially when the same guy puts on different accents/voices to cover the different speakers.

I found the entire production extremely annoying, although obviously the material was terrific.

Francisco Sánchez was much better in that regard.

Filip -> RE: "Toda una gira" Paco - documentary (Nov. 23 2014 12:10:43)

I saw the documentary two times in theaters in Madrid.

What I can tell is that there is not much that is new. More or less, we already know all about Paco, which is not strange since we are huge fans right? :) We saw all the documentaries, all the interviews, all the videos on youtube, read all the articles etc.
2002 documentary covered a lot of things and is a good one. With respect to that, what La Busqueda brings is Paco in a more intimate way. The stories are refreshing and have new perspective I would say, so all in all the documentary was really enjoyable and I liked it.
Also, in this one there are some jokes made by Paco which was really interesting to hear.
Finally, the best part, is that there are a lot of emotions...

Very interesting, Shroomy... I have ordered the DVD from Madrid but it is certainly taking it's time to get here... (growl, etc.). Very glad to have your comments and Filip's in the interim.

I hadn’t much thought about it, but I do that too: you have instinctive fine control of your hand, so it’s easier to vary the angle of it slightly than it is of the file.

Paul Magnussen -> RE: "Toda una gira" Paco - documentary (Dec. 2 2014 21:21:00)

Yes, it’s interesting, and well done. Paco seems to be a natural raconteur.

But nothing whatever either from or about Rámon, I notice: the forgotten brother indeed [:(]

Ricardo -> RE: "Toda una gira" Paco - documentary (Dec. 3 2014 1:46:11)

While I won't admit it is the definitive stand alone documentary, I have to say in addition to what the other two have this complements them quite well. Both in the sense of filling in where others left off in time (1994, 2001) and some interesting details along the way, the new photos and interviews, but also some new footage. Couple things that stand out are the concert footage (of course available on youtube similar things, but quite different than what is in other documentaries), the short bits of him playing Manuel de Falla with his group (never seen that, and him improvising on it was cool), the brief tease of the sabicas jam home bootleg audio, and the general focus on sabicas which is underplayed in other docs, the "meeting of ths spirits" trio in a different concert was refreshing, and finally the real jem of the documentary was the Malagueña from the late 60's in the dinner theatre. Never seen that footage and it is amazingly inspiring, as brief as it is.

In general the quality is way more professional than the other two in terms of the still photos and audio clips and the entire way it is put together. And of course as mentioned the emotional ending and final photo montage is touching. I find the way he uses the audio clips is more intense and exciting, even rhythmic at times when coupled with the visuals, very artistic. And as mentioned the more personal interviews. I would have liked to hear more from Mclaughlin, but as it is it's very good. I noticed many aspects of his career are skipped vs the other two docs, but again, it complements the other two. The one thing I liked about "Light and Shade" vs the other two, is the chronology. I think that is very important and the other two jump around historically too much for my taste, but that is just me.

For new comers I still would recommend Light and Shade for it's concise and neat to the point style, and it hits all the main points of his career up to that point. Also that short Tesoros program that Gamboa produced is nice and chronological hitting on main career pieces, much less dialogue. Once inside the world of Paco, I would point to Rito y Geografia and of course Francisco Sanchez and finally La Busqueda to get the complete picture and go deeper. Can't wait to get it on DVD for sharp picture and audio.

About Ramon and also Paco's dad there exists a nice documentary in Spanish called "Saga de los Lucia" and the main focus is Ramon...but it is mostly done with photos with only a few low quality videos. Some video of interviews with family and friends (Enrique del Melchor, Pardo, fosforito etc), and a short bit on Paco at the end. Not so great as entertainment, but if you are into Ramon it is a must.

I also forgot the excellent home video of the juerga that paco is playing at (I think it is cut from his son's baptism or something). That was cool to see. I think like the other short clips from documentaries...if it exists it will eventually find it's way up on youtube. I waited this long since I uploaded Panaderos to see that entire concert in Casa Almeria. But it's funny I know it is not complete as there is a clip of Guajiras used in Light and Shade from that same TV show.

Anyway, we can only be patient. I would love to scour the archives of TVE someday.

Forgot to add a curious detail. The short Doc included in Paco's live in Spain pack 2010, his son choses some short clips of his Dad actually making mistakes. I mean very subtle little things out of the ordinary like the end of Rondeña he screws it and makes up a new BS on the spot. I notice this new documentary is full of those things...like the ONLY time he ever screws up on Entre dos Aguas in history Curro chooses THAT spot to show in his movie, but it's not just there it's all over the place. For me it is funny because it is almost that he wants to show US guitarists that his dad is human since it is doubtful the general public would even notice. Or maybe he just wanted to annoy his dad?

Anybody notice his speed exercise of doing triplets jumping strings (with the mute under the strings in the hotel)? I had read about that and wondered how he was doing it exactly. Also that entire section on using the metronome was great.

Ricardo
