I was just wondering why the iami tremelo is used so much in flamenco. Isn't it easier to use something like mami so no finger has to do two strokes in a row.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I was just wondering which technique would be best to learn. Thanks in advance.

i is such a dextrous finger that it lends itself readily to repetition or near-repetition. Remember, the real pattern is piami. The speed at which i plays will be the least of your limiting factors, most likely.

Is there advantage to a single hand backhand vs a two hand backhand? Flamenco guitar technique has a lot of logic, but takes some doing to understand why there is a better way or not. It is good to try things out to discover for yourself. Nothing "wrong" with pmami.

There is a pause were thumb should go, but you should see the logic when you play mami...mami....etc vs iami...iami....iami....

a and m are sort of connected inside your hand and can take some excercising to alternate comfortable and fast. i and a are not so connected and easier to alternate. In general, the index is a strong finger and a good "leader". I believe flamencoguru does the tremolo as you say pmami, but I am not sure.

Thanks very much for the replies. Thats all I really wanted to know, I wanted to make sure I didn't waste time learning a method that later on I would have to change because it was incorrect.

I've switched over from piami to pmami after reading Sal's Website. I have better definition tremelo now. Thank you, Sal Bonavita.

There's no wrong way to do it, really. If it sounds good, doesn't hold you back and doesn't hurt, it's okay.

Piami is standard because the i finger is used so much for single note tremolo (as in Asturias) and rasgueado (as in Bulerias) that it just feels more comfortable for most guitarists. Doesn't make it the only way, though.

My m is by far the worst finger on my hand (well, I don't use the pinky much), so I guess I would tend to avoid it, not repeat.
