Left hand nails?? (Full Version)

I find that if I leave a little bit of nail on my left hand fingers, especially the middle finger, I can do better pull-offs, as opposed to just using the finger tip (or that piece of hard white skin I used to call a finger tip!) But of course by leaving a bit of nail I find it harder to depress the strings all the way. I see some guitarists who must obviously be quite hungry, as they appear to chew off anything that resembles a nail from their left hand, untill theres nothing left but an ugly finger tip!! Does anyone else leave a bit of nail?

Its not to be recommended, for exactly the reason you give. You should be able to get a good strong pull off (ooh err missus) without relying on any nail, its purely a matter of technique.

BTW, its not a good idea to go to the other extreme and chew off all the nail, you risk getting an ingrowing nail and infection.

You need to file your left hand nails so they are short and do not interfere at all with fingering, but still enough nail there to protect the quick.
