wiking -> Downstroke golpe above strings? (Jun. 8 2014 15:49:41)

I see paco do this a lot of hard downstrokes. It gives a mighty "crack" at the same time as the downstroke, which is also quite strong. The golpe appears to be hitting the tapas above the strings, as opposed to below, as if he drives his thumb first into the top of the guitar then through the strings. Seems strange though. Can anyone explain how this one works?

It happens here at 7:54

Thanks for any help!

Morante -> RE: Downstroke golpe above strings? (Jun. 8 2014 16:27:11)

This golpe is usually achieved with the second finger (m), flicked off the thumb.

I do it with index finger, first you hit the soundboard above the 6th string the golpe continues
and hits the strings causing this very intense golpe! Make sure that the strings of your guitar are
not to high from the soundboard so you wont hurt your finger practising this technique...
Go easy in the beginning! you'll find out why :)

Something I definately would practice max 10 times a day[;)]

LeƱador -> RE: Downstroke golpe above strings? (Jun. 8 2014 20:50:24)

I use middle finger. Hurt at first then somehow magically stopped, I can do it all day no problem now.

For years I played rumba & used my middle finger but later I found out PDL used his index finger most of the time .....so I started using my index. Now I can use either but I prefer the index as I find it easier for some reason to throw an index golpe in whenever I feel like it. [:)]

It works!

But now I have no cuticle on my index finger. I see now why this is best used very sparingly... Hah.

wiking,

I have heard others say similar things about this technique, but I can use it all day long with no problems what so ever. Maybe your hitting too hard or on the wrong place. Remember you don't have to kill the guitar with golpe. I sometimes hit harder on a Rumba or when I am finishing a song other wise just nice percusive golpe is good enough.

Definitely! I originally tried to learn this technique on my old classical.[:D][:D][:D] Lot's of bloody knuckles...

Now, I do it with my index (on a flamenco guitar), and I do it with reckless abandon. (I don't get the comments about using it sparingly). Keep doing it, and you'll get a modest callous over your knuckle.

Once you think you've got this technique down, try integrating it with short picado bursts, like Vicente does at 1:27:

Thanks all for the help!

edguerin -> RE: Downstroke golpe above strings? (Jun. 9 2014 20:48:07)

BTW the downstroke golpe is called "capirote"

El Kiko -> RE: Downstroke golpe above strings? (Jun. 10 2014 10:09:07)

capirote......is a type of hat or hood that people wear in the processions of semana santa .. which is easter .. ....so i suppose it an extra bit added on to the top of a chord strike .. with a golpe hat on ... like how its written ...#
