guitarbuddha -> The Wise Man (Jun. 6 2014 11:31:25)

Once upon a time a wise man lived outside a village. And so wise was he that he would be asked to mediate on disputes since his judgement always lead to a happy outcome.

Then one hot summer the village became restless. It started one day when a few villagers came to the door claiming 'such and such is a witch'. 'Lead us' ' we will banish them' 'no we should burn them'.

And inevitably enough the next night it was such and such themselves with very much the same story.

And each time the wise man said, as all wise men do.

'There are no witches there have never been any witches this is a happy village'.

But the summer wore on and the belief in witches grew stronger an stronger throughout the village. Camps and factions started to emerge. One held that saying 'horsefeathers' was an invocation to the devil. Another that a failure to say 'horsefeathers' indicated kinship with lucifer.

And the camps grew in influence and the village became more and more restless. Of course the wiseman was concerned by this development because nothing had chaged eally.But the grumbling had taken on a life of it's own.

Seldom a day went past now without one camp or another throwing stones in the village square creating a fracas and then eventually and inevitably by turns both parties would wake him in the middle of the night torches burning in their hands. Ther they were, baying for blood.

Obviously this couldn't continue but what was he to do ? Mulling this over one night he heard a knock at the door. He had not been sleeping you see, he seldom slept now.

So with a heavy heart he went to the door mentally rehearsing his increasingly ignored mantra

'There are no witches there have never been any witches this is a happy village'.

Yet as the door opened he saw in the light of the new dawn he saw not only a few malcontents.

No what he saw was the whole village, every man, bedecked head to foot in black cloaks. And their pointy hats nodded precariously as they pointed their brooms hysterically at one another.

.......

Epilogue

As the wise man left town for ever, heart heavy but back straight and shoulders square a dragon dragon passed him going the other way.
