El Burro Flamencuro -> Does Guajira mean anything in spanish? goog trans thinks not (Jun. 4 2014 22:43:03)

So i was watching an Anthony bourdain documentary on netflix and in one of the documentaries he goes to colombia i believe...for some reason i remember hearing venezuela but this place looks like it's in colombia. Anyways....There is a place called La Guajira....in colombia.

Hearing about Colombianas....and now finding a place in colombia called la guajira and hearing how the two are fairly similar....and also being told by others that guajira comes from cuba....now i am thoroughly confused. Can anyone learn me this predicament or is this one of those topics that nobody really knows the true origins.

Mal pais hombre.

A "Guajiro" is Cuban slang for a country person and a Guajira is a country style song they would sing. Guajiras aside from flamenco is a cuban folk style, I think the flamencos took it from them.

Ahhh thank you. Maybe the place in colombia just means "the countryside" or something....but it may be a slang term for the region idk...why wouldn't it just pop up in goog trans.

Google translate sucks, it doesn't know any slang and I can't figure out "what kind" of Spanish it's supposed to know. My girlfriend tries to use it to txt me cute things in Spanish and it always comes out completely wrong and completely hilarious. Some of the nouns it picks are not "Mexican standard" or "Spanish Standard" so I don't know where it's deciding to pull these words from.

This website is great for slang:
