Great flamenco tonight, without microphones: Alejandro Silva (son of Juan, whom I recorded in 1999) with the guitar of Raúl Vicente, hermano chico de Román.

Since this is a flamenco guitar forum, you should know that Raúl spent the evening playing for Ali and for May Fernández in various tonos without reference to a cejilla. So now you know, if you want to be a flamenco guitarist, you have to know how to accompany any palo, in any tono, without cejilla[:D] Get practising!

That's interesting, was it more than playing 'por medio' at fret 4,6,7 or in tarantas, granaina tonos?

I played in a highly choreographed show a few years ago with only one cejilla change to minimise 'disruptive' guitar adjustments. The singer was an older man- he didn't like it and complained it sounded 'wrong'.

Anyway I'm still a long way from mastering the basics so I'll stick with the cejilla for now!

You are not alone: more than 4 chords has me scratching my head[:D] Still it is very impressive to see it done.

I remember a radio programme some years ago with Niño de Pura: some ill mannered gentleman was berating him and all flamenco guitarists for the use of the cejilla and general lack of knowledge of the guitar. El Niño took off the cejilla and said "Name any palo in any position and I shall play it, with falsetas" and he did.

Still, it is comforting to remember that those of us who are musically challenged can still play something which is recognizably flamenco.[;)]

But I also find it very impressive to see a guy with no knowledge of harmony, or chordnames other than" por arriba o por abajo" and acompany a singer wich he never met before without any previous practice and make it sound like they have been playing together for years!!

I was in a local peña last week for a homenaje to an old singer. Among others there was Antonio Fuentes(winner of La lampara minera 96), he didn´t bring his own guitarist so the peña has a young guy for these ocassions. He sat down on stage looked at the public and said: hmmm what are we gonna do? and someone from the public called out: Echate unos fandanguitos! On wich Antonio replied: Muy bien! Ponle al 7... ehh no, mejor al 8 que hoy estoy bien![:D] S. So he did several different styles of Fandangos for a total of more or less 10 min. and even with the cejilla being at the eight fret(and no cutaway) Carlos managed to acompany him beautifully with some amazing chord voicings and incredible falsetas without sounding boring for a second[:D]
I respect both ways as long as it sounds flamenco!!
