I have been playing small venues, bars, restaurants, fiestas etc for many years now using a Trace Elliot acoustic amplifier and it has taken some seriously heavy use over the last 17 years. It still works fine and is one of the best things I ever bought. One of its great features is the notch filter that cuts out feedback at certain frequencies.

My problem/question is this.
Over the last couple of years I have noticed that certain notes, especially from the bottom string (usually E and D) are becoming much louder and resonant than before and more difficult to control with the notch filter.

Could it be that the amplifier casing its self (which is made of wood) is now resonating after so many years of use like an old instrument?
...or have I finally gone mad?

I very much doubt it, amps are pretty solid. Much more likely that something is changing in your guitar (loose brace?) or possibly pick up installation if you use one.

I take it you are finding this problem in different locations and with different strings? (just to rule out other possible causes).

Also height of the amp relative to the guitar might be a factor, if you suddenly, for example started lifting it up to sit on a chair or down on the floor, if it is something you were not doing before. Also if it's on the floor, could be the floor surface, again if by coincidence two venues with problem had same material.

And about the guitar, could also be humidity changes. Over the years I have noticed those things in even the same venue, same setting same everything, but for whatever reason I have to redo the notch filter, and then it just goes back to normal unexplainably. I think it's the humidity changes affecting the guitar top. But not sure. Perhaps even the people in the room?

The answer is obvious... too many baritones and basses and not enough altos and sopranos coming to your gigs!

Try it with another guitar.....same problem then guess its the amp.

2 MONTHS LATER....I tried the guitar with another sound system and that wasnt the problem. I did find however that the surface the amp was on made a difference. However the "resonance" got worse over the last month and edventually I started getting distortion when I played the Bottom E string (especially tuned to D)

Harold (Kates husband) sugested that after so many years of being moved around, one of the speakers had come loose in the case. I took the front off and cleaned out all the dust from the speaker cones with an old dry toothbrush. I tightened up the speakers in the case but they were not really loose at all. In fact, the bolts were quite hard to move. However it was a good theory.

Then I found the problem. Over the years one of the cones had become unglued from its casing. That meant it was moving around and distorting at high volume. I glued it back up with my trusty super glue (crazy glue) and put the amp casing together.

Amp resonance problem solved!!!

Cool. I have the same problem with a rattling valve/tube. Can't really pin down the reason or the fix right now.

Did your crazy glue solution change the tone of your amp? I've tried fixing speakers before (never for an acoustic amp, granted) and my results were all over the spectrum but never really great.

Well the amp has 4 speakers anyway and all i was doing was re-glueing what had come loose. I wasnt glueing the speaker cone itself, just where the edge had come loose from the casing.

I tried fixing broken cones before as a teenager...waste of time!!

Wow...... this is where the internet gets scary.

The guy who sold me the amp is not even alive any more.
