Do you recognize him (1991) ?

Looks like Paco Serrano.

Indeed: Paco Serrano.

I first met him in ’82, at the Fonda Maestre near the Plaza del Potro. He was 17.

There were many evening jam sessions on the patio. One evening three Spanish boys came in and stood listening respectfully. During a pause, one of them suggested we pass the guitar to another one, Paco.

I would love to have a photograph of the facial expressions at that moment — I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many jaws drop simultaneously.

I remember reading just that in the Brit classical mag umpteen years ago.. Did you write it?

Yes.: almost the same wording (the article was originally published in Guitar International.)

OK, I’m lazy. I didn’t think my modest contributions would be remembered so far down the line.

I always liked Guitar International better than the other Brit mag. It always had interesting articles. Funny I don't remember any thing about your article but that one quote. I think there was a certain drama in that moment, when a young player, unannounced, picks up a guitar and proceeds to display real talent. Wish I would have been there.

I liked it too: it was catholic in taste, had many good writers, and didn’t take itself too seriously.

Unfortunately the owner and editor, George Clinton, apparently had very elastic notions on the subject of paying bills* (Ian Davies, for example, told me he never got paid at all for his contributions); and when he died it foundered, presumably in a sea of debt.

*I've heard many accusations considerably more (potentially) slanderous, but I can’t comment on their accuracy personally.
