britguy -> Need some medical advice ??? (Mar. 18 2014 13:09:56)

I have a painfull problem with my left index finger at the main joint, where it joins the hand. I think I may have twisted it somehow when lifting something, but am not sure. I do have some arthritis in both hands ( 79 years old) but this pain feels different? And the joint looks swollen.

Its been about a week since it started, and no signs of going away. . .

I can manage to play (barely) if I dont have to stretch too far, but stretching and barring is agonizing.

Any medic types here that can offer some advice: do's/don'ts, etc. Would any kind of treatment help? Physio, etc?

Should I stop playing altogether (pain! - as I usually play several hours a day) or continue playing 'lightly' with no stretches, no heavy pressure, or what???

Open to any suggestions.

I trained as a Radiographer. I advise that you stop playing all together, put an ice bag on it and go see the doctor.

I would stop playing all together and consult a doctor/specialist.

Naproxen sodium "Alieve" is one of the best over the counter drugs for inflammation and pain. Follow the instructions carefully; like all drugs this one can interfere with or compound others you might be taking. Arthritis can appear, disappear, and pop up in another joint. I had a arthritic joint on the right hand, took alieve for a while, swelling and pain was reduced, and now I take nothing. I also found that wrapping my hand around a hot cup of coffee in the mornings before I played also relieved the discomfort. As I get older I am reminded of what my Dad used to say, "getting old is not for sissies." Good luck and just back off your playing a little for a while.

britguy--if you use words like agonizing to describe a movement you have done prior without pain i suggest a trip to see your primary care physician. a week of pain is a good indicator something is amiss.

There's no point in continuing in this condition. If you do you might not be able to play at all in the future. I have to agree this requires a physician's care.
