I re-finished an electric guitar neck and used Minwax Wipe-On Poly (original version--not water-based). The finish it produced feels very thin and has a low gloss. I would definitely use it again. It actually feels like a natural finish. Could you obtain Gunstock Tru-Oil? That might be better for an acoustic.

Think about the new finish have to funcion with the old one. If not, strange things happen. You can always put a thin layer of shellack as a sealer and use whatever on the top. Shellack sticks on everything and is very neutral.

Some finishes never dry and using something like this under a finish that does dry can cause problems. You might have to experiment a little. I put a finish over old paint and it melted and completely lifted the old finish. The process only took a few seconds.

lets say on a bare wood,

completly clean wood no finish on it,

Tru-Oil over shellac would be good, if you can get it.

I've used a couple of those polyurethane's on furniture. They are very tough after
fully cured, and can be buffed out. If you don't go insane layering it on, and sand
them back and buff then they make a nice finish. If you're not sure what you
are finishing over, then you need to make sure to sand the entire surface with
something like 400 grit to make sure they have some tooth to bond to since the
don't necessarily cling to everything.

I would NOT be surprised if there are guitars out in the stores that have "Minwax"
products on them ... It's not horrible that use it, it's how you choose to use them
that matters. If they are the only show in town then why not?

The first one the fast drying poly will make blonde wood finish yellow like
most marine varnishes, so think about color before you start ...

Regards,
Jeff
