I've used a couple of those polyurethane's on furniture. They are very tough after fully cured, and can be buffed out. If you don't go insane layering it on, and sand them back and buff then they make a nice finish. If you're not sure what you are finishing over, then you need to make sure to sand the entire surface with something like 400 grit to make sure they have some tooth to bond to since the don't necessarily cling to everything. I would NOT be surprised if there are guitars out in the stores that have "Minwax" products on them ... It's not horrible that use it, it's how you choose to use them that matters. If they are the only show in town then why not? The first one the fast drying poly will make blonde wood finish yellow like most marine varnishes, so think about color before you start ...
