Anders Eliasson -> A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 9:06:59)

So, I made a new headstock design and I would like to know if I unconsciously copied some other builders headstock.
The reasons I ask is that I dont really recognize headstocks very well myself. I study other things in guitarbuilding. Also, when I made my own first headstock design, someone later on told me that it was a Barbero design, which I didnt know. (Its ok if you call me an ignorant)
I´m not going to throw away the other one, just have this as alternative just like I have 2 rosette designs for my 1A guitars.
Amongst guitar builders its very popular to say where they got the inspiration for their designs. Normally it has to do with something Moorish. And arch or a tile from Alhambra. Thats so cultural end educated.
So I´m proud of saying that the inspiration for this one is from a piece of toilet furniture from IKEA that I watch when sitting on the toilet in my house and to this I´ve added a Conde half moon. They seem to be popular these days.

You may have comment and say what you think.

Between this and your other, I prefer your other headstock, but if you like it go with it. This one for me is a tad boring or uninspired and doesn't really have any personality. It looks like from a cheaper factory guitar such as admira etc. I personally think you can do infinatly better. Maybe you can put a more personal touch to it, perhaps even something that connects more to your own ancestry?

tijeretamiel -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 11:02:02)

Anders,

I personally prefer the headstock design which you currently use.

I think it's aesthetic really suits the overall for your guitars.

I think you have tempted the fates with asking about headstocks. Arash the last time such a question was asked used the opportunity to post up pictures of headstock designs inspired by penises...

I like your old one better, it's looking better and it's more unique(haven't seen other people's headstocks even resembling them). Maybe it's because the angles aren't very steep in the new one, and it's not easily memorized like the old one.

gerundino63 -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 11:57:20)

Hi Anders,

I do not like the headstock a lot too.
It is ok, but a headstock is somethin eye catching.
In my oppinion it is not pronounced enough, that would already make it a bit better.
Also with this kind of "flat" ( i mean 2 dynamic with mo depth at all)headstocks, if you hold it a bit twisted, like on your picture, it looks uneven right away,.... restless.

edguerin -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 17:25:39)

I like the second and this "old" headstock best.

Thanks a lot for your honest replies. Its highly appreciated.

So my "toilet" vision of a mariage between IKEA and Conde is not so popular. Well, thats ok. I actually like the headstock myself. It has a quiet presence. But I´ve also had the chance to see it in 3D and have it in my hands

n85ae -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 20:30:58)

I like the second one best as well.

Jeff

keith -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 20:35:11)

i actually like the "ikea toilet" version. i like the idea of allowing the customer to choose-sort of like one would do with a rosette. i would definitely choose the toilet version.

crossoverman -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 20:39:03)

Hi Anders

I really like the new headstock a lot. I personly have to think if take this new one, or the actual "most wanted". But I believe, if I really had to choose, I would like to take the new one...

And I like the new one more than the old one shown above....

Leñador -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 12 2014 23:12:14)

El nuevo mejor

Anders Eliasson -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 7:14:00)

Well, cool enough. Two for two different tastes. Thats was the whole idea.
Now I have to choose which one to use for the guitars that are not orders.
Giving people options to choose from is complicating life for everyone

krichards -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 8:13:37)

I like the old one. Its instantly recognised as 'Anders Eliasson'.

The new design is more generic and similar to lots of others.

gerundino63 -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 8:43:13)

Maybe the "contest" is not really fair.......this is a normal Anders Eliasson headstock, also unfinished.
It gives another expression too than a finished headstock.....

crossoverman -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 9:04:08)

Yes. Thats true. Would be nice to see the new one in real and (for me) prefered with a peghead.

Finished wood will look different from the first pic and for sure a lot better. Maybe you will take 1 or 2 of the new headstocks for your next serie you will build...

That is true and thats why i will keep the old one as well. But you know, there´s always someone who want something different and its also nice to make different things as well.
maybe I should make a zigzag rosette. I havent made one for years.

I will take more pictures of the new headstock when the guitars have been finished. Meanwhile, you can see it here:

Flamingrae -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 10:53:28)

Number 2 for me - completely understand the need to change your ideas every so often. Just not sure the new one does it for me. The distinct feature of your older style of headstock is the curve/arc on the inner part. I bet that is really tricky to do, although you will have worked a few things out by now. That curve and what follows further up, is your distinctive feature. I might be tempted to make a few more variations upon a theme and run with that idea, keeping the curve and changing the top? Just a suggestion and you do whatever you want to - one of life's rewards for being in control of what you do. I'd sketch a few more then take some thin ply and rough out a few variations.
Seeing the headstocks in context with the rest of the instruments is good. They are still "Anders Guitars" every inch of the way.[8|]

Sr. Martins -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 11:21:20)

My 100€ flamenssical guitar had that exact headstock.

Joan Maher -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 11:29:15)

I do like your current headstock - perhaps a little carving - see example :)

crossoverman -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 11:35:06)

looks nice with the carving.....[;)]

Ricardo -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 14:12:41)

not bad at all. Perhaps to be clear, only use one or the other on a specific model. Such as blancas keep the old, negras have the new, or your 2nd guitars use a different look, so at a glance people know what's up with your guitar. It is similar to Rodriguez I think, and old Reyes. I agree a carving would look more elegant, even just some lines or something. Also, again, the plain version can distinguish the 2nd guitars and the carved versions the A models.

Just some ideas. I think head stock designs are super important, but I can't say one is better than another.

keith -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 15:00:48)

the carving on the guitar joan posted has a gerundino feel to it--nice.

shaun -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 15:47:05)

Personally, I like the new design. Without the carving it seems a little more understated than your others. Very tasteful.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 16:17:23)

Its fun to put up a thing like this. Everyone can have a go for free.
I wont do the carvings as in J maher´s picture. Its a good idea, but I dont want straight lines in my designs.
The old design (that I will keep) I´ve changed a lot over the years. It has matured and I feel that it has reached its potential. Thats why I made a new one.

This with having different headstocks for different type guitars (1A, 2A, blanca, negra) is not my way of doing things. I know thats what I´m supposed to do. make a clear line in my production so that my possible clients can se clearly what they get. Small photos with options you can pick. Its so cosy.
But I dont like that way of thinking or living. Just look at the way our world is. Its because of this kind of squarehead thinking. I believe in artistical liberty and thats what I´ll do. My whole building and my whole attitude towards life is based on that. Just like I dont have any linkedin profile, I´m not a member of any blah blah luthiers gettogther etc. I´m just me.

I agree that the new design is understated. And thats what i wanted something quiet.
Lets see how it devellops. Knowing myself, I´ll most probably "get inspired" and ruin it all.[:D]

gerundino63 -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 16:27:55)

Maybe some fake diamonds Anders! That is way cool man! [:D][:D]

Yeah, why not. I have considered making rosettes with weird things.
I am considering making and inlayed hart made of pink ebony into a black ebony circle on the new headstock. Future might show something.

timoteo -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 13 2014 19:44:34)

Someone needs to buy Anders a Bedazzler.

[:D][:D][:D]

My brain is alredy working full speed imagining what to do with a Bedazzler on my new headstock.

estebanana -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 14 2014 8:41:52)

The only thing I think your head needs is a bit of space between the top of the tuner then the beginning of the inward curving cut of the finial design.

Those may be lyre style tuners and the lyre is taking up that space, if so I think it looks better without the lyre. If those are not lyre style tuners I think a 1/4" or slightly more space on top of the tuner looks better. It seems kind of cramped and the space would to my eye would make for a better overall proportion.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: A question for the headstock freaks (Feb. 14 2014 15:00:22)

Basically I make my headstocks short, because I consider it to be a bad place to have weight.
The Lyra Tuners go just inside the incurving.
