Miguel de Maria -> amp question (Feb. 3 2014 19:06:08)

So I use one of these to power my computer speakers:

http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dta-1-class-t-digital-ac-dc-mini-amplifier-15-wpc--300-380

I just got a Ditto looping pedal to practice rumba improv.

I would like to plug into the t-amp for home practice.

The signal chain would be:

Cordoba -> Looper -> T-amp -> speakers

The guitar and looper use 1/4" instrument cables. So could I just get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter or cable and plug right into the amp? Would there be massive sound or power degradation? The T-amp can amplify computer music fine, but I don't know about guitar level signals.

It will sound like your guitar sounds when connected to that amp.

Try plugging the guitar and hear what it sounds like. Just turn down the preamp volume at first.

Well, that actually didn't work. I hooked up the guitar cord to a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and then went right into the amp. No sound came out.

The amp does just fine on the headphone out on my external soundcard.

Assuming the amp is powering your PC speakers with no problems, why not leave it there and go guitar > looper > soundcard > PC ?

You then have a range of options - could monitor via headphones direct from soundcard or PC, or via the speakers.

Is that adapter mono? Try with a multi-fx pedal and a stereo cable, maybe your amp only works that way.

Blondie, thanks, I didn't think of that, I will try that when I get a chance.

Rui, not sure. I don't think I even have a stereo cord, but if Blondie's idea doesn't work, I'll try that!

Well, I sort of got it to work by going into the soundcard. Unfortunately, the level was pathetic. Turning up the soundcard to 100% and the amp to 100%, got a barely audible level. (By the way, using Bartlett guitar mic).

Not really workable. I'll have to try it using my Cordoba and see if it's a big change. Kind of weird because the amp is perfectly sufficient to play mp3s louder than I ever want.
