George Best - Pele said he was the finest soccer player in history.

Alcohol is a killer if abused.

Some memories:

July 4th, 1977 – Los Angeles Coliseum: New York Cosmos vs. Los Angeles Aztecs.

Cosmos: Pele and Giorgio Chinaglia. My German brother in law and his German friends were so excited - Franz Beckenbauer from the Bayern Munich and the West German national team (Winners of the 1974 World Cup) had joined the Cosmos.

Aztecs: Georgie Best (We called him Georgie as he was well respected!)

What a game! I took so many pictures. Amateur photography is one of my hobbies. One picture I took has Pele and Georgie Best each about four feet off the ground with their bodies horizontal to the playing field. Their feet are heading towards each other and the soccer ball is between the two men’s feet. The ball is about three feet from each mans foot.

George Best played for our San Jose Earthquakes. He set a record that I will not forget! He scored three goals in less than 90 seconds of playing time! You would have to have been at the game to believe it!

God bless you George Best.

I just learned the news that George Best has passed away. It was a waste of talent having succumbed to the temptations of beautiful women and alcohol and giving up what he was best at, at the age of 26. Gascoigne was the next waste. I just hope Wayne Rooney won't follow their path.

A complex man, alcohol was his solution, not the cause of his problems. By all accounts a lovely man - may he now rest in peace.

Don't describe it Tom, scan it and post it here! Sounds cool and a difficult shot to get. Helluva lense by the sound of it.

Simon;

I used my 35 mm with a 400 mm lens. I will look for the picture and post it here.

Tom,
Nice post...I am not really a football fan, so I had no idea that he played in your part of the world.
But I'm glad he displayed his footballing talent and thrilled you like he did us.
As for the rest of it, a man should be allowed to live his life how he chooses IMO.
Too many plebs who've achieved nothing with their lives have had a view on George and how he should have lived his life.
Had Henrdix, Joplin, Morrison, Lennon etc lived longer, they would probably have been pillaried by the media until they were wrecks.

As George said "I've spent heaps of money on parties, loving the most beautiful women in the World, driving sports cars and enjoying expensive champagne....the rest of it, ..well I just squandered...! " LOL!

I've heard not a bad word about him from anyone who knew him.

He said that he never regretted any of it!

Let's just be glad that we were alive at the time to witness the possibilites of human beings such as he to confuse us and inspire us with their art and skills.

cheers

Ron

Then you may also remember that goal he scored for the Earthquakes
in the playoffs against Ft Lauderdale, after beating 4 or 5 defenders,
watched it again today, fantastic.

Like you said..God bless you George.

Rich.
