Michael Jay -> Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 18 2014 20:34:29)

Received a brand new Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway today.

Cypress back & sides, European Spruce top, Conde bracing / dimensions, and all french polish w/ Sloane tuners.

Jorge is located in Palm Beach, Florida and has been a pleasure to work with. The guitar has an incredible Flamenco voice with great mids and crisp highs.

To say I am pleased with this new instrument would be an understatement.
Jorge, you rock!

Michael

keith -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 19 2014 9:19:58)

his website has a cincinatti address and phone number....hmmmm

C. Vega -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 19 2014 11:19:17)

His website states that... "He moved to the province of Andalusia in southern Spain in the late 1970's....".
Just in case he or anyone else wasn't aware, Andalusia isn't a province.
Sheesh. [8|]

Ruphus -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 19 2014 12:20:11)

It´s a dish ... No. ... A vegetable, isn´t it?
... wait, ... That was "artichoke"!
Artichoke hearts in olive oil, so yummy!!

Anyway, the only but quite resounding slap I received from my old man was for my mark in geography. He thought it essential part for common sense.

Andaluz, Andaluz ... >scratch, scratch< Quite sounds like something deep-fried with tartar sauce on top. No?

I give up. [&:]
Whoever went to Andalusia must at least have had a good time.

What would you call it or how would you translate: Comunidad Autónoma

Andalucía is a Comunidad Autónoma with 8 provinces and Spain is a country with 17 Comunidades Autónomas.

The guitar looks crisp, although I must admit that the headstock is to dramatic for my taste.

tri7/5 -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 19 2014 15:19:25)

In case anyone is wondering, the luthier is a member here.

Michael Jay -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 19 2014 15:29:02)

Jorge DeZofia moved to Palm Beach approximately 1 year ago.

I don't get the negativity or the need to criticize what someone says. C. Vega, does it really matter what one calls a geographical location? Does it make you feel better this morning?

This was my first post here, I was so excited to receive my first handmade blanca. Then two people come in and question where the guy lives and how he refers to a geographical area.

Keith, I find that exhibiting arrogance by saying "Sheesh" in an effort to elevate ones intellect is quite disappointing.

Now I see why people find these online forums so obnoxious.
Thanks for the comments, have a nice life.

Michael J.

You answered your own question.
I would call/translate it as meaning an autonomous region or community, thus making Andalusia an autonomous region made up of eight provinces but it is not a province in and of itself.
The region's capital is Sevilla which also happens to be the capital of the province of the same name.

Hey, I was in the mood of making a fool of myself. There was no aiming at anyone else. No offense meant.
And besides:
People who trash online forums often seem to be lofty cynics themselves.

You can´t estimate this place like that either.
Make a search and read a bit before forming an impression. ... If you expect valuable bits out there anyway.

I like the looks of that guitar, BTW.
Normally not so fond of pointy cutaways, but this guitar is overall handsome. ( Though dito I prefer pegheads crowns simply shaped, like Anders said.)
And it looks as if it would be sounding good too.
Congratulations for your new guitar!

Ruphus, thanks ad No doubt..... :)

Thank you for clarifying your comments. I take your word that Floro Flamenco is not typical of other forums. The searches I have conducted do back up your position. I was just a bit taken aback by the other comments.

I didn't expect the response that others posted.
Ruphus, thanks again.

I've been following Jorge's work since he started and I've talked to him on the phone several times... from everything I've heard his guitars are getting better and better. I'd love to try one some day.
I'm sure you got a nice instrument Michael.

Thanks...

I also oen a Lester DeVoe Negra and I have to say that the DeZofia has attributes that I feel are as good or exceed the DeVoe. Jorge was a pleasure to work with, sent photos several times and week and invited me to his workshop on several occasions.

Thanks. It was just out of curiosity and because I sometimes dont know the translation.

Senior Vega. If I had a website I'd call it a region as well, whether it's really an autonomous wotsit or not.

Autonomous blah sounds like some place in the Soviet Union.

I love cutaways. That one is pretty sharp. You could do some damage with that. And the headstock to finish them off.

Is that two pieces of wood (sides) or can luthiers do magic?

Lovely looking guitar. Is it rude to ask how much it cost?

I think there´s something you got totally wrong there. In Sovjet comunism, there was absolutely no space for autonomous whatever. It was all the contrary. Centrally controled everything.

sig -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 20 2014 16:56:14)

I'm usually not a huge fan of cutaways on flamenco/classical instruments but that looks good. Makes me want to play some Manowar on that sucker!

Thanks, I would only think it rude if the person being asked took offense...and that I do not. :)

I believe that the final cost with the Sloane tuners was right at $3,200 US.

I am an architect, as such, the Florentine Cutaway is to me, a historically classical element. It is elegant and balanced yet creates tension.

Thanks

I'm a little perplexed by how take a huge amount offence to the visual look of a cutaway - it has a functional purpose, which I believe is the most important aspect!

I've looked at his guitars before, his Padauk negra looks beautiful. The EIR negra on YT sounds great despite it not being the best video.

I assume that everyone will practically appreciate the benefit of a cutaway.
Sceptisism seems to rather arise from eventual loss in sound, to which there only adds the visual appearance, which may be aesthetically imperfect to a taste that grounds on a conventional corpus.

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 20 2014 20:46:42)

While I'm busy working in my workshop today, yes in West Palm Beach, actually Singer Island, (my website contact info is unfortunately a bit out of date). people are both praising me and ripping on me.. [8D]. I guess province is not exactly correct but for non spaniards other than state, or shire, it's probably the best way to describe a collection of cities of a region...
Anyway, thanks Michael for the complimentary comments on your new guitar! Thanks Andy for your continued interest and positive comments!
I have built about half a dozen cutaways since I moved to Singer Island mainly for cross over players who plug in and amplify their guitars a lot of the time.
I have installed several different pickup systems in these guitars from LR Baggs hex, Fishman premium blend, K&K pure/quantum blend, B-band 6 series blend to Carlos VIP. (the trickiest of all to install).
I will be drawing up plans soon, with the help of Michael, for a 1998 Conde (built by Felipe Conde) with an optional plantilla outline from my 1973 Faustino. (Which I am currently using with slight modifications for my own guitars). The guitar has been meticulously measured with the latest post construction measuring tools.
It will be available to anyone interested when completed.
I haven't posted much lately but have looked frequently and everyone's work I have seen has been very inspiring particularly Andy's and Ethan's. Ethan gave me some good tips before I made my first cutaway - thanks again!
One more cutaway order then back to some traditional builds for me. [:)]

Well, keep up all your good work and I'll post some pics later...

Indeed, with over 30 years of experience I can design and draw multi million dollar buildings, but the thought of preparing plans for a classic guitar has me a bit tentative. I want to ensure that they are impeccably accurate and dimensionally true.

I can't wait to help Jorge with this project....it is going to be fun.

As a new poster here, I really want to thank everyone for their thoughts, comments and opinions....both crabby and thoughtful. :) Seriously, I pass no judgements only offer gratitude and blessings.

Thanks

PS, Jorge I like your headstock.
Personally, I would have designed something a bit more architectural but that's me. :)

El Burro Flamencuro -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 21 2014 0:20:49)

Congratulations on the new addition to your family...i mean your beautiful new instrument!

z6 -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 21 2014 4:24:14)

On the contrary Anders. If we look at a more obvious example, many countries have words like Republic or Democratic or even People in their names. Much less Autonomous.

You might not want to book your holidays to The People's Democratic Republic of... (Fill-in name and it'll still be a tyranny).

Regions, even if called autonomous, only seem so until the government grabs more taxes or land.

Truly autonomous 'regions' never have the word in the name. The mere presence of such a word in the name almost guarantees the absence of any autonomy.

It's a matter of what is invoked by the phrase after it is 'translated'. Knowing that Andalucia is not a region wouldn't make me use words that carry baggage if the context is to sell.

A civics guide or geography text, yes. But I don't need clues to a perceived political system messing up a beautiful region, or province (which does nicely) of Spain.

(Sorry, an autonomous community. It works in Spanish, if you like.)

People often think my country (Scotland) is in England.

Anyway, it was being used to 'catch' someone in a fib, and there was no need for that.

Michael Jay -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Jan. 30 2014 23:00:51)

After 2 weeks of playing this wonderful guitar, I am very impressed and pleased with Jorge's work. We compared the sound to and find it to be very "Conde" like. I believe this is primarily due to Jorge's use of Conde bracing and dimensions.

In fact, I like this guitar so much that I have listed my DeVoe Negra for sale. :)

I will be recording soon and will post the file for your listening pleasure.

Michael J.

Michael Jay -> RE: Jorge DeZofia Blanca Cutaway Build (Aug. 17 2015 0:52:14)

Just a quick follow up.....

After owning the Florentine Blanca made by Jorge De Zofia, for just over 1-1/2 years, the guitar has opened up amazingly well and has become one of my favorites. I am convinced that the dings, dents, and scratches all contribute to the wonderful sound.

It seems that Jorge has been a busy boy. He has built instruments for Eric Hansen, Jim Stubblefield, and many others.

Jim wrote a song to honor Jorge and his fine work. Eric collaborated on and the result has been released on Jim's most recent album, Encantado.
