I do a little bit of pulgar, picado, arpeggios and rasgueados and sometimes use planet waves varigrip. If there's no time, for example playing in a cafe with friends or something, I just massage/rub my hands a bit. I think the point is to get good blood flow to the fingers and get the muscles ready. Also a spiked massage ball is good thingy to squeeze before playing

When i really take it seriously i start with tipping the strings only, then lift the finger and tip it again repeatedly. Next i add/retract energy to the string without actually fretting/plugging the string for real, just feeling and appreciating the energy exchange between finger and string. I also focus on relaxation, biomechanics and general control, doing 1 thing at the time at very low speeds.... finger by finger, phalange by phalange. Then i do scales and bindings for the left hand and tremolo and arpeggio for the right hand. For most techniques i developed a hole scale of (pre)exercises that i also use as a (in between) warming up. My 40 hour rebirth sessions most of the time focused on things like this as well, practiced both on the guitar and by mental visualization (imagining and feeling the moves/physical contact/energy exchange and sound as real as real can be). When possible i start with meditation and mental visualization.

This is one hundred percent honest and I have posted it many times.

Nothing comes close to the benefits of washing a big steaming pile of dishes (rubber glove over RH).

Slow pieces first, toque libre is perfect. Later move to gymnastics such as "impetu".

what prompts me to post is not only curiosity but I had a classical teacher once back in the day that told me don't bother to warm up your fingers warm up by stretching out your wrists. Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with that.

Bulerias. Almoraima, mostly. Can't stop myself. I love it. And it has everything I need. Then 'Carter style' (country) on any fun (easy) sequence. That makes alzapua easy. But only the start of Almoraima and rasguedos from here and there at full speed. When I get to fast alzapua I know it's time for some country to really loosen up. I take the speed right back then up to 90 and venture not into thin air. That's when it turns into comedy.

Then Tico Tico theme.

Then Tremolo (free and metronome). Arpeggio and tremolo are ( currently) interchangeable to me. Never intricate. Up and down. Trying to let the thumb do it on it's own. If it isn't relaxing me I'm doing it wrong.

Then it's all technique, until I fall asleep. I tend to smack myself in the head with the headstock and wake up.

Carter style takes me home. And I'm Scottish.

I'm on the couch with my skinny silent guitar by then watching football or American football. And I always improvise with what's on. Even the commentator's voices. I couldn't do that without a pick before. (Sounds awful and my daughter (7) protests when I play Big Time Rush, if it's on. She's teaching me German (with Nickelodeon and I'm teaching her to enjoy her own voice).

At weekends I get a chance to differentiate. I never have to perform. It would get in the way. (And would be torture for the listener.) It's all warming up to me.

I get slower as I warm up. Deliberately. I like the feel. And it scales up better when it's slowmo. I like the discipline (of flamenco). It's of a different order. But I have a tendency to get in the way of myself and flamenco guitar techniques solve that. Only a million miles to go. But what little I have seems to have been fused into my tacit infrastructure of knowledge. Like driving or swimming or typing. Very solid feel developing. Even killing myself over a single classical tune never gave this back to me. The techniques are so complimentary. The attitude rules the outcome (given sufficient application).

How did the guitar teacher sound when he wasn't warmed up?

Warming up only has meaning before a concert, no?

Cold church halls haunt my past.

Ramon Amira -> RE: warm up (Dec. 4 2013 15:41:52)

Run your hands under hot water, and wring them together just like you're washing your hands. Two minutes of that, and you can go straight into Bulerias.

No. Obviously it depends from person to person and from day to day but in general when i don't warm up properly and start playing to fast to soon i become trapped in an emotional state of rush that can only be cured by stop playing for over an hour...or watching PDL during half an hour. In my very very best moments i would start the day with a 60 minute "workout". Quite often that was all i did on 1 day. Still it raised my level more than any amount of actual playing could have done. But i also have had moments were i hadn't played for weeks, picked up the guitar and after 5 minutes played extremely well. But to be able to do that on a daily base or even better on command i need a daily portion of workouts in order to understand/unite mind, body and guitar. Since i haven't done that in 20 years i completely depend on the the mood of the day, some days i play pretty good, on other days i can't find a single string.
