Hi all – this post probably belongs in the recording section, but hey – this is where the traffic is at,, right?

I'm quite happy with the results I'm getting in my home studio lately recording with a pair of pencil condenser mics spaced a foot apart, with guitar 2 feet away from mics. Technically, I'm using modified Octava mics into a stock ProTools 003.

I want to add a rhythm guitar track. My instinct is to record this mono sinse two guitars recorded in stereo suggests to me I will not be able to pan them to get the desired separation.

Thoughts?

If you're recording a guitar track, and will want to pan it left or right,
then yes, record it in mono.

Granted, my recording knowledge is limited, but when I hear Vicente or someone similar, my guess is that that big sound is achieved through stereo recording. But in the case of his song Querido Metheny - a duet with Paco
- would you think each guitar was recorded mono?

I realize I'm asking for people to speculate. But I'm curious if anyone has experience recording to flamenco guitars and what approach they used

Forget about any of the rules you think there, and just experiment.

There's nothing wrong with recording a guitar with two mics, and
panning them both to the same side. Even though you dont get
the stereo effect, you still hear both mics summed together.

Here is a link to a store that sells hi end studio gear and acoustic guitars. You can listen to different setups and get ideas about mic placement. This is a steel string recording, but they probably have some with nylon as well. These are Todds microphones i believe?
