BarkellWH -> Savarez 540J Bass Strings (Nov. 5 2013 21:03:28)

Some time ago I bought three sets of Savarez 540J High Tension strings for my Gerundino. I had a set of 540Js that had been perfectly fine with a very nice sound, but they had been on the guitar for a long time and it was time to change. The basses on the new sets that I bought never seem to settle in tune after the initial period of stretching, and twice now after a short period of time, both the D and A strings have broken. They have not actually broken in two; rather, the inner core has broken (presumably because of too much tension trying to get them to stay in tune) and the outer metallic winding is stretched and extended.

I am wondering if I might have purchased a bad batch when I picked up the three sets, or if Savarez quality (and quality control) has deteriorated. I always liked the sound of the Savarez 540J High Tension strings on my Gerundino, but these recently purchased sets just don't seem to settle into tune and eventually break.

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon with Savarez 540J HTs lately? If it looks like I just got a bad batch that's one thing. But if Savarez simply no longer makes a quality string, I'll switch brands. Any comments or experience one way or the other with the 540J HT strings would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Bill

I use the Savarez Cantinga 510CR and really love those strings. All the ones I have
bought recently have been fine with no quality problems ...

I feed all my guitars the Savarez 540J's HT. No problems, great longevity and incisive, powerful sounds. I have never had a bad set. I have tried many strings but none as fine as the 540J's.

n8Sae and Etta,

Many thanks for your replies. I think I just got hold of a couple of sets of Savarez 540Js that had defective basses. I had never had trouble before, but the basses in these two sets could not settle into tune; they just kept stretching until the inner core broke.

I'm hoping it was just a fluke. Will buy a couple of newer 540Js and hope they are as good as the one's I used before these last two.

Again, thanks.

Cheers,

Bill

I like the Corum bass' as they seem to be more resonate in the upper part of the fingerboard than any other. Right now I have a Catigua 5th and Corum 4th and 6th. as that's what I had available and I can't hear any difference. I have just switch to New Crystal from Luthier trebles as I am in the mood to use the sets the string makers offer. It may be the the Cantigua line is just to offer something new to attract obsessive souls. This seems to be the marketing strategy nowadays: sales slumping? change the packaging and name promising quantum leaps in musicality..

I can hear the difference, I have packs of both kinds of strings and they are both
good but I prefer the Cantiga's the price is close enough that it doesn't make
me pick one or the other ...
