My program Cool Edit 2.0 is not cool anymore. I wanted to make a loopable data, so i cut somthings out and saved it. Later on i open it again and the program obviously has added 55ms. And it does this with every file. Also saving the file into another folder or partition does not help.
I even have re-installed it.

I thought maybe the data is write-protected but its not. Then the idea came that Cool Edit may restore the original file when opening the new one, but it also does it without having close the application.

It must have somthing to do with the saving process. It doesnt save any changes anymore if you try to overwrite a file. You can only do this if you save to another filename, BUT then it add the mentioned "55" ms. Sometimes its 50 and sometimes 59.

Weird!

Try doing the same thing with another application. This will determine whether it is a Cool Edit problem or something else (soundcard/driver weirdness).

Try Audacity, it will do all your basic audio editing/recording and its free.

I had this problem a while back with N-track, but it was to do with a specific setting for that application.

Its the same in Audacity, its the same in Wavelab (Steinberg).

Im screwed up. I will never be able to record anything, anymore [:(]

To mention what i have done in the past days:
- I set up a new IDE driver from VIA
- Deactivated Windows Services (some)
- Erased unused space on some partitions with the program Eraser.

I have NTFS on all partitions by the way.

Jon, do you have some ideas, what the reason might be?

Ive found out now that it doesnt happen with wav files. Only mp3...

Hmmm..

Let's get this straight - you can record a wav and save it, then close it, then re-open it and save it/close it again in ANY of those applications without the file increasing in length, yes?

If thats true, and you get the problem only with mp3, then the encoding process is the problem - what software are you using to encode/save to mp3? Something in your mp3 settings may be amiss. You could try a different encoder, there are free ones out there.

What soundcard are you using, not a Soundblaster Audigy by any chance, is it?

Hi Jon,

Yes its Audigy 2 ZS.

Jon do these decoding/encoding settings change overnight? It was never a problem until yesterday...

With WAV its all fine.

At the moment i dont know how do import/change the codec in Cool Edit or Wavelab. There is no "use this codec" button, or any other way i can see...

The codec is, i guess since its not mentioned, Frauenhofer mp3; i also have Lame on my computer.

Ps: tried some different settings: Usually i select Best quality for encoding but with medium it has only some 12ms additionally and with LOW it has the same length!!!!

Ok, we are getting closer.

By fiddling with quality you are changing the resolution. Now there is a known audio 'issue' with some audigy cards which is why I asked - they can't sample at 44khz, they sample at 48k and convert on the fly. This is known to cause problems in some audio situations.

No idea why this has sudenly happened though - have you changed anything on your system recently?

Anyway, I think the problem is your soundcard and/or its drivers. Try uninstalling and re-installing the soundcard and its drivers.

If this doesn't work try also updating drivers, also look to see if there's any kind of patch available. No idea why this has sudenly happened - have you changed anything on your system recently?

I have a bigger problem now: XP is screwed up. It didnt reboot and only the failure "..windows/system32/config is damaged" came.
Tried to install new XP but the cd was also a bit damaged. Some data could not be copied and i have now serious problems installing new drivers for Sound card, VIA Chipset Driver and etc, because it always says during installation "... could not be found" (coz its left on the cd)
The only thing that works on my pc now is the internet connection... and Opera.

Believe me, from yesterday till today i didnt change anything! I only have defragmented the XP partition, but i cant think that has done any damage...shouldnt it have the opposite effect?

Replacing the above mentioned folder by the new installed one has also failed because obviously some data of it is in use and can not be copied. The repairing function from the XP-CD didnt work either.

Its a complete mess.
