SLJ -> illegal? unethical? (Aug. 21 2013 17:10:27)

Im wondering how you fell about putting a inst. vid that's on youtube on a memory stick, to study at home? I have no internet at home.

should permission be asked? or is it free domain?
Steve

For personal use, I believe it's free domain. Others will know better, I'm just padding my post count hahaha [:D]

good question as transferring the material to a memory stick could be interpreted as copying (such as photocopying pages from a book to be used for a class even though no money is gained from the transaction). i am not saying it is the same but possibly could be interpreted but who knows. you are using the memory stick to view the material on another format (non-internet) so it is not really copying, per se. i hope a person with a legal background weighs in.

will the youtube police show up at your door? probably doubtful although given the way things are going with the n.s.a. who knows. personally i would be more worried about the lacey/cites police showing up for the rosewood and ebony on my guitar.

here is a link to an article about public domain--see point 6.

Depends. WHat video is it? If it is commercially available in a different format (DVD) then yes. If it is only available on youtube for free, then it's no problem.

Illegal, depends, unethical, no. Unless you fear prosecution i would't worry about it. In the netherlands it is allowed to make yourself a copy of all sources for personal use but not to make copies for others. Unlike other countries we pay a royalty surcharge on recordable cd's/dvd,s/hard discs.

With regard of the locally limited and censored internet it would be great to know for me how recording of YT videos is been done.
Is there a way other than installing screen recording apps? ( I had one that would however overstrain CPU through who knows what hidden routine.)

- Or maybe there is only getting a hold for registered YT members?
Thanks for info in advance!

I do it all the time, it really is necessary when I want to learn new falsetas. I need to download the video so I can slow it down on VLC. In my opinion it is neither illegal nor unethical. It's on youtube for everyone to see, so what difference does it make if it is in your hard drive too?

Ruphus, I use this program, really simple and easy to use:

Actually, you can view (and slow down) the YouTube video directly in VLC without downloading it first. Just "Open Network Stream..." and enter the YouTube URL of the clip you want to watch.

Also, no program other than VLC is needed to save this to disk, if that's what you want. Simply choose "Convert/Save.." and you can make a local copy for yourself.

Just noticed this thread ......I think people put stuff on you tube to be watched ...why else would it be there? ..and since its free .. then being copied is maybe another way of saying that you like it ...

If people want to keep their stuff private , then dont put it on youtube .....simples

I have some stuff saved to favourites and other stuff I have dowloaded to look at later ..its just easier to find it and see what is going on ...

I think if its on Youtube then its fair game .. however the people do like to get hits and comments about this and that as it is a form of feedback . and I often leave comments on the channels i like , and have even made a few youtube 'friends' in this way

Also, I am referring to the stuff that I put on , and is mine , I would not put on stuff by other people . i.e. a commercially made DVD of falsetas , for example....however .. if I played them .....well
