Got my hands on this awesome resource for luthier nerds. Huge encyclopedia of guitar makers in madrid by Luis F. Leal Pinar. It's in spanish but if you know guitar talk it's pretty easy to understand. Some nice photos of personal collections of Lopez Nieto, Amalia Ramirez, Manzanero, etc. I would have like even more detailed pics in general but as it is the book is huge. Anyway I recommend.

I think that the original hardcover edition of this book is out of print but I heard that there was a more recent and considerably less expensive softcover reprint. The same author also published his Guitarreros de Andalucia in 2004. It's pretty much the same format (right down to the gaudy purple "velvet" cover) as the Madrid book but with fewer pages. It covers makers from Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba, etc. It's also out of print and there's no softcover reprint that I'm aware of but there are copies on the used market. Cool and informative books but not cheap in the original hardcover versions.

It are very nice books. I have guitareros de Andalucia. I cannot scan, but can take a picture from some pages and post it..... In Whitch builder you are interested?

One complaint I have with these books, particularly with the Andalucia book, is the photography. Many of the photos are just poor quality amateur snapshots and a good number of them were already 20+ years old when the book was published. One would hope for better photography in a book in this price range but taking into consideration the subject matter and the limited market for such books, you have to take what you can get. The Madrid book is somewhat better in this regard.

Your right about that... Here a picture from Gerundino and Eladio,in Gerundino's taller. If you look close, you can see that Gerundino and Eladio are cut out another picture and glued in this one...[:D] Look at the hand and above the hair....photoshop avant la letre... [:D] Images are resized automatically to a maximum width of 800px

Sorry for bad pics. One of the coolest guitars Was this 1910-12 M. Ramirez 9 string with golpeador... I can only imagine what the hell kind of Flamenco fusion was done on this baby! Images are resized automatically to a maximum width of 800px

Ya gotta love that sexy tailpiece....and the unique string attachment method utilizing both the tailpiece and the tieblock. [8\|]

Maybe the tailpiece was added later, after all that string tension started to do bad things to the soundboard near the bridge.

The tailpiece is most definitely a later addition, most likely added as a quick and dirty fix for a lifting bridge. A number of Spanish makers in the late 19th and early 20th century like Manuel Ramirez, Torres, Vicente Arias, etc. made guitars with extra bass strings in this style with the offset bridge and the extra bass strings running along side the neck. 11-string versions are the most common. The famous 1912 Manuel Ramirez guitar that Segovia played was originally one of these 11-string models and was converted to 6 strings in the Ramirez shop before Ramirez gave it to a young Segovia. None of them originally had tailpieces but I have seen one 11-string Arias that had one installed at a later date.

Forgot to add about the book photos and layout....the author is CLEARLY slanted in the direction of FLAMENCO which I found quite surprising for this type of book. Most of the nice books I find about spanish guitars seriously skimp on the flamenco side of things, with big spreads on only rosewood guitars and cameo photos with classical celebrities like segovia, bream williams etc etc. This book has not ONE photo of segovia and only mentions him I think under M. Ramirez and Jose III (with his famous letter). The photos you DO see are of sabicas, escudero, Ricardo, Melchor, Paco, Pepe Habichuela, ....even Nuñez! [:D] A very clear predjudice...plus the "collections" section of photos we see quite a lot of peg heads and cypress. Years ago I expressed an interest for a coffee table book of only flamenco guitars for a change, and I guess this (and the Andaluz book) are exactly what I have been after.
