SLJ -> C shaped barre (Aug. 2 2013 14:26:33)

yes another newb question. I watch you guys hands when I watch your vids. I saw you using a C shape chord with a barre. It makes a great sounding chord ,, what I mean is the pinky hitting the root on the 5th string ,, Ive played guitar for yrs. But never did this. I of course know using the e shape, am shape, d, shape with a barre. and have tried these the last couple nights. But they are not NEW like using the C shape. I see some of these flamenco chords require long stretches,,, but sound fantastic. Can you recommend a next chord for me to learn.

sorry if this is not clear.
Steve

The open form of B7 but played with barre.

SLJ -> RE: C shaped barre (Aug. 2 2013 14:51:37)

thank you Ramzi, Ill try it now.

So it would be the open form of B7 but played without the pinky on the first string. Or else you wouldn't have enough fingers to play it. [8D]

thanks, I actually knew a guy with a extra thumb {no lie},,, but I guess that wouldn't help anyway :)

In chord/tab notation it would be: 312311

Thickest / sixth string: third fret, third finger
Fifth string: first fret, via index finger barre
Fourth string: second fret, second finger
Third string: third fret, fourth finger
Second string: first fret, via index finger barre
Thinnest / first string: first fret, via index finger barre

this is often followed by moving the bass note down
then changing to F (or E(7) shape)
as in 312311 - 212311 - 131211
its a good workout for the left hand and is most often in this context, of course you can skip the middle chord with the F# bass

also, practice the open A flamenco shape: 02320 becomes say x46764 (or x46760)

ps: i've also countered the G shape in flamenco, really difficult - 320003 becoming say 542225

C11/G. Works well as a passing chord to a straight F or Fm barchord as the 11th is a tonic pedal.

D.

PS 'Fifth string: first fret, via index finger barre' Often not sounded/muted with underside of third finger and a doubled seventh can be a bit muddy.

E6(no 5th) ? Pretty easy if you remember that you don't need to fret the fourth string. Pinkie extension to d# will only be hard if you have placed the barre too stiffly.

I can do it capoed, but not uncapoed, Im rebuilding my hands, they got weak from 2 yrs of OT banjo playing. You can play that style, with 2 fingers on the left hand if needed[:D] Im feeling the growth and it feels good, stretches I couldn't do 2 weeks ago are easier. Isnt learning fun!

Oh well, good luck.

At least Em is the relative minor of G. I LOVE Earl Skruggs.

Ramzi has suggested a very typical chord por medio (in the cambio) where all notes are played, none muted; Flamenco, isn't so polite as to leave out the dirt!

Yeah but I'm lazy and it is kinda hard to get the fifth string to ring, and mostly on recordings it doesn't. I like dirt too, but working hard for it seems to defeat the purpose.
