Tonight was easily the best concert in my opinion.
Moratito is certainly no guitar virtuoso, but he has a nice way with the guitar and his "sunshine" personality just comes beaming through.
Jose Merce, who, in a way I've likened to the "James Brown" of Flamenco (though not in an endearing way..LOL!) did a particularly good concert tonight also.
Lots of soulfulness in each of their performances.
Excellent stuff!

You know, it's a rare and lucky thing that happens in one's lifetime, when two very gifted personalities meet, (like John Lennon and Paul McCartney etc) and that's what my mind drifted to during the performance.

Can you just imagine, with that crowd...and that atmosphere.... if the young Paco and the young Camaron had to walk onstage?......

No disrespect to any of the brilliant musicians who have appeared in this festival.

(In fact I wonder what their reaction would be also!)

It just makes me all the more awestruck in the light of what these two guys achieved.

Anyway...rambling now!

Off to see "El Capullo", one of my favourites... and definitely the "Ronnie Wood" of Flamenco!

I loved the way that he had a good career ahead in football, but decided to give it up for Flamenco, because he liked to party too much for training in the professional game!

LOL!

Well....whaddaya think?
Capullo?
Definitely the best singer of the whole Festival in my opinion.
He looks mad, probably is mad, looks like a sort of Bruce Springstein who's been let out of jail after serving a 15 year sentence for something he didn't do, and is set on catching up on the things he missed out on!
I'm sure El Cameron himself would have been one of his biggest fans!
The performance was pure body and soul.
Magic!
Pure Flamenco.
Loved it!!!

Does anyone know who the baldy guitarist was?

Solid as an oak tree!
Brilliant player!

Hasta

Ron

Ron asked,

That was Periquin aka El Niño Jero, although he ain't much of a niño anymore.[:D] His younger (and even balder) brother, Antonio Jero, played at the Bulerias Festival.

Tonight's performance by Moraito was certainly the real thing (except for that tanguillo thing he played). And you should never have any doubt that Jose Merce can sing "por derecho". He's one of the few people that continues singing the traditional stuff along side of his more modern stuff. He's one of my favorites.

Phil
P.S. You got something against "baldies"? [;)]

The concert tonight was great, very nice atmosphere. I was really weary about Jose Mercé, I thought he would sing his comercial stuff but far from that he sang my favourite malagueñas del Mellizo without keyboard, then he went for seguiriyas and ended up with bulerias but the real ones not the "Lio" ones. That is the Jose Merce I like to see.

Melchor, José always knows what to sing for what audience and that's why he still gets invited to the best cante festivals...no 'pilas alcalinas' for real aficionados.

Antonio Canales has that same double personality...this summer his dancing was traditional and powerful at the 6 or 7 festivals he worked...no silliness at all. I think both he and Mercé got it right...keep a commercial repertoire to make money, but don't let your flamenco get deformed.

Ah! Got it now Phil,
I've only seen his picture on Flamenco-World and he looks very much younger there. He plays on Capullo's new album along with Diego Amaya, one of my favourite players.
Don't get me wrong, Jose Merce is a fine singer, it's just that when I saw his concert at the London Proms last year, I felt he sort of posed and strutted around the stage with a kind of haughty attitude. Hence my "James Brown" association. LOL!

I definitely love El Capullo. A great singer and a great character!

cheers

Ron
