Ruphus -> Stories of Lust and Anticipation (Jul. 14 2013 12:59:48)

I am having a first custom guitar built for me currently.

And what started composed, rather spontaneously and as if it was to be a quick project, changed into a rather special and more and more detailed undertaking.
Just as remarkable simultaneously the entertaining factor for me, who is crumbling away in anticipation.

I mean there is good reason for excitement considering impressions of the luthier´s talent; and the materials are outstanding and of aesthetical sensation as well, ... but if you could see HOW I am stumbling over myself about any little notion of the project ... about what the luthier is saying or about any little photo of the bench ... You might be laughing your head off.

Several times a day I will launch some pics and contemplate over them as if it was the worlds sensational epitome. All the time trying to imagine how the thing might feel, sound and look when completed.
Such delicious fancying. And the piece of mind it gives midst of lesser pleasant conditions ( for use of moderate terms) is unbelievable. It works like an instant mood elevator. Anytime.

It really is beyond belief.

As entertaining as it all is to me, it made me interested in hearing some stories of fellow aficionados. Not necessarily about guitars in construction, but any exciting events when you either experienced or anticipated a guitar as bewitching, but couldn´t get your hands on it right away. Stumbling over yourself while awaiting the opportunity of embracement.

All my guitars came with special stories, some including goosepimples and "sleepness nights".
I am sure, occasionally you will have found yourself turned into a hyperactive fidget too. :0)

Ruphus,

I enjoyed reading your post.

If you don't mind me asking what were your motivations to getting a custom build opposed to buying a guitar off the shelf? Were issues of specification the motivating factors?

Also what is the guitar? Could you provide details of the woods etc?

I'm thinking of commissioning a acoustic guitar in the near future. I'm not sure whether I could either take the wait, or that buying a second hand guitar or off the shelf would be sufficient.

Post up pictures of the build if you can. I'm sure many people would love to see the progress of the guitar.

Ruphus -> RE: Stories of Lust and Anticipation (Jul. 14 2013 15:27:24)

Hi Tijeretamiel,

Normally I would always prefer trying out a guitar first before buying.
Originally the only factor that made me consider an hypothetical custom build was because of use of a certain wood, which is ancient kauri. The oldest usable wood in the world and often times of stunning appearance too.
From there I had in the back of my head to "one day in the future" possibly have a guitar built of AK.

The initial spark to this very case of ordering a custom guitar was something else, though.
It was my accidental clicking on someone´s demo video who is a luthier and fellow member of the foro.

I had not expected what I was getting to see in that clip, in regard of both his playing and more even the sound of the guitar he had build.
Coming videos of following guitars confirmed that the man can build in such ways consistently; and what I heard gave me hope that his building gift could provide me a "remake" of a certain, very special guitar that I had the pleasure of playing decades ago, and which I have been trying to hunt down since then.

It was a guitar that would beam you off your anywhere couch into some southern Spainish landscape, like looking down from the hill of an olive groove or such and hearing the bumblebees humming by.
And this maker´s guitars, already evident in recordings, sound flamenco as it gets.
What came on top of it all is that his prices are distinctively below of what you would expect with guitars of such remarkable properties.

I don´t want to point to him namely yet, before receiving the instrument first.
That is because if the guitar turns out as expected ( which I am pretty certain of) I want to open a dedicated thread with story and review.
If the guitar would theoretically however perfom below a certain level, I would for certain reason prefer to not name him.

It should not take too long until the guitar be finished, and we will find ways to ship it to over here ( not directly possible due to international sanctions). I estimate to receive it within coming one or two months.

Not very long after receipt I will with 90% certainty be bothering the forum with audio and pictures. Am even considering getting a certain lense for my main camera and background paper only for this object. The eye candy shall be worth appropriate measures.

Funny you should ask as I placed an order for one of Ethan Deutsch's standard flamenco guitars just a few days ago. It will be here on Tuesday and I am bubbling with anticipation. The hours will drag by. Not going to play flamenco but from what I have heard from vids it will work well for classical that is Bach and contemporary composers such as Carlo Domeniconi and presently Chick Corea and I especially like Ponce's 24 preludes thus avoiding works where a lush dark sound is needed.

Ruphus -> RE: Stories of Lust and Anticipation (Jul. 14 2013 16:27:24)

You are not far away!
... Though what sounds so trivial like "Tuesday" will still be dragging you through one night, another hole day and yet another night, before you be allowed to await the truck driver.

I feel with you [:D], while waiting myself for ... just a pic of the bindings. Vainly peeping into the mail browser since Monday now. |O]

I had the same feeling when I was finishing up my negra. I could never fully describe how much I excitement I had. The wait was worth it when I heard the sweet sound comming from the strings. It also was amazing to hear the guitar change its voice after the strings where on in for about a month.

Ruphus -> RE: Stories of Lust and Anticipation (Jul. 15 2013 16:36:41)

No doubt, anticipating how your self-made guitar may be feeling ought to be very special excitement. Especially when it is about a first self-made.

And I guess there should be several such thrills. First one when stringed up without finish and one when everything is done.
-

Aeolus, I have been set for new photos for tomorrow, so "Tuesday" rings my ears too now. Two half days and one night apart. :O)

I fear I may have difficulty sleeping tonight!

Ruphus -> RE: Stories of Lust and Anticipation (Jul. 15 2013 19:47:05)

Good luthiery must be among the top satisfactory professions.

Imagine, while you are working, customers are already twisting sleeplessly in their beds, awaiting the product of your hands.

It can´t get much better in terms of appreciation, can it.
-

Write a review after acclimatisation, Aeolus.
I like reading reviews a lot.

First off, congratulations on the new aquisition! While I've never had the pleasure of waiting while my instrument was being created, I did have the same anticipatory reactions when I purchased my Culpepper several years ago. It was my first luthier built instrument and I couldn't wait for Andy to ship it to me. I was dreaming that somehow it would make me sound like PDL or Vincente, well it didn't but don't blame the guitar, it is fantastic! I have to say that it did impart upon my playing certain feelings of confidence as it is a dream to play. I think It took about 4 days to arrive and I was like a child on a Christmas morning. I couldn't wait to tear open the gift!! It was Andy's #4 guitar and its really something special, to me anyway. It was a great purchase...

Damn! Checking UPS tracking they have changed delivery to Wednesday even though I paid for 2 day delivery. We are in the midst of a heat wave and I wanted to limit the time the guitar was in transit.

nickmontez -> RE: Stories of Lust and Anticipation (Jul. 16 2013 0:56:41)

I get scared every time I am forced to check my guitar during a cross country flight. I am almost paralyzed thinking about checking my negra when I fly to Japan.

Damn, Aeolus!
That is how I experience life. The more anxcious I am the rather there will be coming somethingg in between.

Summer heat is something to worry about indeed.
After shipment arrival from overseas an idiot of a driver had put my Ramirez into his trunk with him stuck in traffic at over 40°C ( in the trunk hence probably easily around 100°).
That day I wrote a really nasty e-mail to the seller, as the guitar performed like a piece of cardboard, with action off etc. Two days later I felt so lucky about having had not sent the mail yet.
Unbelievably the guitar recovered and turned out pretty lush actually.

A while afterwards Lester DeVoe and I agreed on postboning a shipment of a guitar of his in order to omitt shipping in the summer heat.
Hope yours will be largely in ACed halls and air streamed trucks though / arriving alright. > knock on wood<

Hey Sig,

Thank you so much; got to hold that thing in hands yet, though.

Guitars that really fit do indeed elevate one´s inspiration and performance.
That original specimen that I hope to be "reproduced" now, used to do so in an unbeliavable way. No matter what I messed around, it would just sound fantastic. You actually only needed applying any sort of arpeggio and it would sound lovely Spanish on steroids.
Nearly such is what I so dearly expect with this coming gem. > drool!< :O)

Nick,

I recall forum members pointing out that US airlines have meanwhile slackened regulations and will allow taking of guitars into the cabine. I wish you a good and convincing day for the trip anyway!
Give the lady at the check in your best smile.

Last time I did, she allowed my guitar case on board and registered my cat for half of its actual weight ( which meant quite some spared cash). She was a real sweety. :O)

NP,

Ron is a very nice guy, I am sure he will be supplied with the better production and pass on the better of the two to you as promissed.
3 weeks can be such a long time, innit. ;O)

I am expecting some pics to be dropping in any minute now. Mostly around this time of day seems to be the creating man´s computing time.

I had a conversation with him a few years about shipment during freezing weather. He held off until the weather moderated. Lovely guitar too good for me so I gave it to a young relative with talent.
I sold a as new guitar based on the Gerundino with Ziricote body and cedar top: I know...what was I thinking! In any event I sold it on ebay to a guy living in the San Jacinto valley and which I could see at that time had a daytime temperature just under 100F. so I spent more money that required to send it priority mail and I told him so. I could see from tracking that the Postal Service attempted to deliver it in the early AM bless their hearts. But he wasn't home! And he didn't come back for a week! And then he found fault with the zinicote, it was scrunched up or something.
I was able to convince him that whatever flaw was his fault.
Anyway a chat with the UPS chat person resulting in he insisting 2 day air started the day after they got the package tho' Deutsch got it to them at 8:31 AM Monday.
It's now in Kentucky awaiting the next leg of its journey. The temps are around 90F max now so I hope for the best.

I have been able to take my guitar many times. TSA does not say a thing so i just bring it with me. A few times I have been forced to do a gate check due to all the baggage space being taken up. It always happens when I am in the last 1/3 of the passengers to board the plane. One time I was gonna be forced to check it and the pilot, being a guitar player, offered to keep it in the cockpit for the flight. That was really nice of him.

Ruphus -> RE: Stories of Lust and Anticipation (Jul. 17 2013 17:49:20)

It has happened to me that a crew would kindly take the case to their closets when compartments were filled.
Like your pilot some of airline staff will feel with musicians´ angst from brute baggage guys.
There seem some berserks among them and too little control.
In the early eighties on arrival at NY Kennedy Airport my case came out looking like antique and with metal edge applications broken. The ground personal was irritated about the lesser behaved European bloke at the counter and the company never reimbursed.
Luckily the guitar stayed intact.
-

Got six new pictures last night, and while a bit piqued at first for the delay ( the man really got a full schedule these days ) I am now back to freezing before screen.
Looking at the work in progress, hypnotized.

Can you say beautiful.
And how it makes your day to see a couple of sheets and struts coming together. [:D]
