Please share some good excercises to build wrist strenght and avoid tendonitis... I would also appreciate some tips on how to avoid wrist pain with pulgar tecnique as I tend to get sore wrist especially when doing pulgar practice. Thanks

Try to play as relaxed and loose with the wrist as possible. Paul Gilbert said fast picking with wrist (similar to pulgar action with wrist) was just like "scratching a dog".

I train my wrists by playing guitar, and all other excercises that are related to playing guitar, I also do that on guitar, but I do play carefully and I really find that after trying to do minimal movement and strain I have become alot better and I have been recovering from a broken hand lately but I came back stronger I think, just having more care about how to do things.
After I partially severed some tendons in my hand I also had alot of problems with pain, but it was because I was just not paying attention to proper technique.

You could try playing ping pong or something though, I did that for recovery, and swimming also does help actually.[:)]

Learn to play the piano.

Seriously.

But the cheapest electronic keyboard you can get (with at least 4 octaves), and practice basic chords with both hands.

Trying to press octaves is especially good.. ie. little finger and thumb of the same hand, while using the other fingers to create the 3rd note in the chord.

Then do arpeggios on the chords and scales to exercise finger independance.

After doing that for 30 mins a day for a week, your fingers and wrists will feel like iron.

Cheap electronic keyboards can be picked up for $50 or less (new).

Music theory is easier to pick up on a piano (IMHO), since it is linear, unlike the guitar. You can learn everything from the C major scale, then worry about the other keys once you can see the patterns.

Nothing like a balanced and active lifestyle to avoid aches and pains. Hydration is also important as the weather gets warm so try and drink enough water as dehydration exacerbates any RSI.

As far as the guitar what Ricardo says is correct and that is how things should feel. But how to get there,,,,Eric Van Goch often cites a mantra similar to mine. Play relax return. Break every thumbstroke down into these three components and judge how well you do them and how comfortable you are afterwards. Or just practice super slow and try and be aware of your body.

This thing is pretty cool.

I do these exercises Before, between breaks, and after I am done practicing. The more the better. I will even catch myself doing them through out the day! I also do Grisha's "warm-up" exercises which can be found on the "Grisha performance enhancing drugs" thread.

those are pretty good ones. However after I have started doing some stretches I have developed some stronger pains than before. Before I just used to have some light pain after serious practicing. I guess its best to concentrate on learning to relax instead of stretching. I suppose dont fix it if it aint broke is the thing here in my case

I am sorry I was gonna urge caution earlier.

Muscles are in the the forearm not the hand, strain can go straight to the joints and tendons if you try and stretch the 'hand muscles'.

A good thing to do is just to give the hands a good shake, anything to get the blood going. Hand clapping is also quite good.
