machopicasso -> Thumb Position During Arpeggios on Bass Strings (Jun. 26 2013 9:47:12)

I know that it's recommended to anchor the thumb on a bass string when playing arpeggios on the trebles. But what about when one's playing arpeggios on the bass strings?

Is it always best to anchor the thumb against the guitar above the strings; let the thumb hover freely vertically above the strings; or something in between?

Below, both Vicente (0:25) and Tomatito (0:36) appear to touch the guitar lightly with the thumb when they're in this position, and I was curious if this was the norm.

Never let the thumb "hover freely". Rest it on the top.

Thanks. Curiously, has this approach always been the norm in flamenco? If not, any idea as to when it became standard?

Kinda hard to do on a classical because the sixth string is so much farther above the top. Also the m finger golpe behind sixth string the same.
