benjolin -> Hello from Mexico. (Jun. 13 2013 18:31:04)

Hi everybody.

Just found this place. I´m an amateur guitar player looking for resources to learn how to play and sing flamenco.

I hope I can be around for a while.

I live in northern Mexico, 3 hours from the border to Arizona.

Any suggestions, tips and resources are welcome.

:-)

Hola, amigo:

Welcome to the Foro.

You can learn a lot in here if you stick around for a while. . .

And your written English is pretty good. A lot better then my written Spanish. Although I used to be able to speak it pretty good about fifty years ago.

Enjoy yourself in here.

Buena suerte. . .

Thanks.

I´ll be hanging around for a while.

Welcome to the foro!

I would be interested to get an idea about how flamenco might be perceived by average Mexican ears, and in how far the genre might be familiar to folks there.

Now that´s a very good question.

How is perceived? The first impression is "WTF is THAT S#%T????" The cante it´s very difficult to be appreciated. The guitar playing is overwhelming and the rhythm compas makes no sense.

How familiar the genre is? Well, there´s a couple of TV ads of brandy, soap and peptic relief that plays flamenco on the background. In the late 80´s Gypsy Kings hit the mainstream with their rumbas... and that was it. In the best cases is related to Ottmar Liebert, pasos dobles and classical spanish music like Albeniz or Tarrega.

Ohh wait... there was a Soap Opera called "Amor Gitano" with a nice rumba.

Very interesting.
Thank you!
