Thats nice reyes. May I ask how much did it cost you? These days they all seem to be very expensive

VICTOR1 -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 3 2013 8:49:29)

I paid a lot for it I would say over twenty, it was very hard to find. I was told that Manuel Reyes senior stopped making these guitars with this rosette.

TANúñez -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 3 2013 12:07:03)

Very nice but why is this in the luthier section?

estebanana -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 3 2013 12:32:26)

Tom I like your avatar.

Didn't know Sr. Reyes was making guitars in 2009. I imagine he produced very few in these years.

Strange to think that I could buy 20 good guitars for this price.[:)]

I'll risk sounding like the little boy in the Emperor's new clothes - I'm probably just a touch envious...but is that fretboard shaping around the soundhole a bit poor - the shape is not consistent with the soundhole and there is a chunk out of the ebony?

Not to mention the irregular reveal inside the rosette and ugly fretwork on the 19th fret ends; but if this is indeed made by the old master one needs to be a little forgiving. I'm approaching 71 and losing a bit of stamina. I can imagine what it will be like in another 10 or more years if I make it that long. At his age he probably doesn't feel he needs to prove anything and he's definitely not competing with any of us.

aarongreen -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 5 2013 0:56:14)

I just finished a restoration on a 1954 Barbero, my favorite builder of all time. The end of the fingerboard was hogged out with a rasp, a really, really rough rasp. Trainer beaver rough, it looks like he spent all of 30 seconds on it. Interestingly enough, I had the guitar in my shop for months before I noticed it.

What can I say? The old masters could do that sort of thing and get away with it because they had all of the bases covered so well in every other regard. That Barbero is just a monster, the notes weigh a ton each, are covered in razor blades and come flying out of the guitar like they are on fire. When you get it right, you get it right....

Maestro Reyes is much the same.

Ha ha yeah and if any of us did that we would get crucified.

The principal cellist of the SF symphony, Amos Yang, showed me the Testore cello he uses. The back and sides are poplar and look as though the maker used a dull brick layers trowel to carve them. But oh it's a gorgeous "old man" as he referred to him. [;)]

tele -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 5 2013 8:33:08)

I think small lack of detailing is only a mark of a true flamenca[:)]

el carbonero -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 5 2013 10:45:43)

how long time did you wait for this guitar?

VICTOR1 -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 5 2013 18:17:45)

very long time over three years.

Morante -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 5 2013 19:57:58)

Reyes had a waiting list of 10 years some time ago. How did you manage to get one in 3 years?

constructordeguitarras -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 6 2013 5:24:00)

I think the rosette has gravitas. It reminds me of Spanich coats of arms.
And the crest of the head is beautiful.

I think it was purchased as second hand

So why 20.000 dollars and 3 year waiting?

victor,can we ear the sound?

VICTOR1 -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 6 2013 23:46:27)

I’ve contacted guitar dealers all over and asked them to notify me when they get a Manuel Reyes guitar. It took three years until I was contacted. I am the second owner of this guitar.I will post some audio clips as soon as I have it ready.

What a description. I want one!

Morante -> RE: manuel reyes guitar (Jun. 7 2013 15:29:40)

Hola Victor

Why did you want a Reyes, at any price? Do you have a special relationship with the family or great admiration for Reyes? Or do you think you have to pay this price for a good guitar? Reyes has made some great guitars, but...

I would love to know your motivation.

Suerte

Morante
