Hi Estela,
I've been watching the whole of the broadcast festival since Sunday night, so relax, you're not alone!
Obviously I've been particularly interested in the "Guitarras Cantaoras" section, with Gerardo Nuñez, Diego del Moreno and friends.
Phew....One thing I can say is that Jerez certainly has a thriving "Left Bank" (or "Greenwich Village") community of very talented musicians and intellectuals!
Still.... good luck to them....I find it interesting and enjoyable, but not what I thought was Flamenco?
Then again..who am I to judge, being a Scotsman in deepest Scotland! LOL!
It was interesting the way that Diego del Morao rationalized his Bulerias to a straight 2/4 time that any young person in a Disco anywhere could tap their feet to.
Also I found I could hum "The Girl from Ipanema" on top of the Alegrias he played!
I'm certainly not implying that they were playing without compás.
On the contrary.
It is obviously so intuitive in these native Jerez musicians that they can hear Bulerias rhythm in a dripping tap.
Good funky beat. Maybe that's the road to the future?
Compás is definitely alienates the music to the casual foreign listener.
Anyway, and seriously....they are all first class musicians, with a brilliant technique and a really good Flamenco tone....but it's a wee bit over my head if you know what I mean?
Maybe it's just age.
I bet old Manuel Morao must be reaching for his tranquilizers right now, wondering if this is still his beloved Jerez or if he's just in the middle of some bad dream where the world has been taken over by Martians!
