Does anyone know of a not overly complex and expensive video editing software that can work with a lot of different formats and also convert from one to another. For example that can load .mp4 files and convert to formats good for the web or to ipod compatible format.
I don't need complex functionality, cut and paste, replace sound track, add text with basic effects.

Probably not much appreciated by 'real video editors' but i think that windows moviemaker might fit to your needs. The good thing is that is free to download at microsoft.com. I know it opens .mp4 to edit and it has several other output formats. I used it for editing some schoolwork and sometimes still have some fun with it :)

Cheers

for merely convertinfg anything to anything else have a look at the simple and free..

Freemake video converter ....

for more messing about look at

trakAxPC

this can do a lot of stuff and the basic element of it is free but if you want more options of file types etc you have to buy , but i think you can use e trial full version for a month or so
it all depends on what you want to do .. there really is a lot of stuff out there ... a simple search will revel hundreds ...

That would probably work for me, problem is that I am still on XP on this computer and I'd rather not upgrade because of the couple of weekends it will eat up as I would also upgrade my motherboard, reinstall, and reconfigure all my stuff.... I stress just thinking about it and I would rather spend the time practicing.

But upgrading has been more and more on my mind because of speed issues. I will wait to see what are other options and maybe I can put time and money in upgrading and getting the free MovieMaker... I'm sure it would satisfy my needs like the old version did.

Last month I installed this software called Microsoft Expression Encoder 4. It's free and you can download it here:

It's fairly complex, but if you want to do just simple stuff you won't need much skill. Just watch some tutorials on youtube and within 15 minutes or so you will know the basics.

Virtual Dub is free, easy and can do a lot.

Thank all, I have decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my computer, bootup time is killing me, so I will just get it over with. I will then go back to Windows Movie Maker and see if does what I need.

My god, I should have upgraded before. Moving to Windows 8 was a joke, must have taken me 1 hour to setup and install my top apps. And my new solid state drive is just a dream... man it's fast.

..and the new version of Window Movie Maker is great!

Abode CS6 suite is the best in my opinion

Avidemux, to whoever might enter here weeks after it was asked. But I'm surprised this free and farely good option wasn't named before.
