Hi all,

For now all my guitars have had standard modern tuners on them. I plan to start trying pegs in a near futur. Anything I should watch for? (Types of pegs, some reamers better than others, anything else...)

Nothing special but:
Buy some decent pegs. (I buy from dictum, (thin viola))
Get a decent pegshaver and reamer with the same taper.
shave the pegs thin. I do 6,2 - 6,5mm at the tip.
Work slowly. (important)
Control that the reamer stays 90 degrees to the headstock all way round.
Use a good pegdope. Aply it various times before you string the guitar and kind of give it all a godd "massage".

For once I thought pegs were already shaved to a correct taper, so that's one thing I didn't know. For second, I didn't know peg dope was needed!

I have a question: is there a reason why flamenco pegs are almost always as long as violin pegs? Like in this picture:



The pegs seem to stick out too much at the back (at least to my taste...). Would there be a down side at cutting them shorter?

Pegs have the right taper, but they are not straight enough and they are to thick, which makes tuning poor. So shaving the pegs is absolutely necessary if you want them to work well.
Pegeheds have a poor reputation mainly because these things are not done well.
Pegdope is neccesari because if not the pegs stick to much and tuning is then difficult.

Make them the length you want, I shorten Viola pegs which are longer than violin pegs some 5mm
Pegs wear the headstock, so there are 2 reasons for not shortening them to much:
1) they´ll get shorter with time
2) Clients tend to be very picky when when buying a traditional design. They want it to look traditional.

Last, if you make use long pegs and a headstock angle like the one on the picture, you´ll get serious trouble finding a suitable case (its already difficult enough). The guitar should NEVER be resting on the upper pegs when in its case. It might cause the head to snap off.

i work with violin pegs and buy them from a supplier and found that although pegs may have the right taper there is a lot of variance in the thickness. this seems to be more prevelant with lower priced pegs. some supply houses will hand pick pegs from their bins if you give them the specs you need.

One of the reasons pegs have a bad reputation is that to many dont do what is necessary to make them work correctly. And a shaver is neccesary.

The reason why most use viola pegs is that they are comfortable for the fingers when tuning.

Thanks Alain for starting this thread. As I am finishing my first flamenco guitar (not my first guitar though) which has machine tuners, I'm thinking ahead for my next or future build. Tuning pegs will on my next flamenco. Thanks all for contributing.
