It sounds like it might be a rotator cuff problem. If it is, sometimes just rest fixes it. In addition there are simple exercises you can do to help a rotator cuff. If nothing helps, you should see an orthopedic surgeon.

I have always pain in my shoulder when my guitar is too high.
Playing om a cauch is a no, no, I feel it imediately. I get a knot in my upper shoulder muscle.
If I see your picture, in your avatar, your right arm seems pretty high to me....
Maybe you try the oldschool position for a while.

Hey Lionel, I've had some similar problems too. In fact more than once, unfortunately.

I think you should go to the doctor right away, because it will do you no good waiting one more week. You already have that problem for two weeks, so it doesn't look like it's going to cure by itself.

However, I don't really believe a doctor will help you much because all they will do to you is prescibe pain killers and anti-inflammatories. They will also do an x-ray, but since you didn't hit anything with your shoulder everything should be alright. But you should go to the doctor nevertheless, just to be sure. Sometimes it can be a small benign tumor that's causing you the pain. A friend of mine had one of those this Summer and had it removed, nothing serious.

What I really recommend you to do, after seeing a normal doctor, is going to a chiropractor. I had a serious lower back problem caused by a stupid jump when I was 16 and I could barely walk. I entered the chiropractor's office with the help of my mother and got out walking again by my own two feet. I also had a similar pain to yours on my right shoulder, mainly caused by bad posture and a few punches, that was again treated by a chiropractor. Last month I hurt my left hand, guess who treated me again.

Just be careful with the chiropractor you choose, some of them are not very able and can be dangerous sometimes. Ask people you know for opinions and recomendations on one. If they know what they are doing and fix people, they will have a good reputation.

Be patience with that.

In the meantime, and regularly for the rest of your life, I would suggest (I am no doctor or expert) that you stretch and exercise (strength building core, shoulders, arms, and the whole body while you are at it). Bringing workouts back in my life has made wonders, I lose one hour of practice but I can sleep at night and don't hurt!
Start with just streching for starters to see if it makes a difference, 10 minutes morning and 10 minutes before going to bed. Do it while watching tv if you do that....you might see progess within one week.

Chances are it won't go away if you don't change anything, I think pain is normally a message from the body to do so, or, getting a phone call from your ex.

That's not correct. Any good doctor, and especially an orthopedic surgeon, will most certainly be able to help him after diagnosis. And if it turns out to be a rotator cuff problem, as seems at least possible, a doctor can recommend the exact proper exercises for the exact problem.

In the case of a rotator cuff, there are several simple excercises that fix it.

If the pain is slight and of only 2 weeks duration no need to panic. I tore the tendons in my left shoulder in a road accident and was unable to play for almost a year due to pain. At your age and occupation I would wait a while before seeing a doctor and try varying the manner of holding the guitar and stop sleeping with your arm under the pillow. It hasn't hurt until now but that doesn't mean it is not a possibility.

Good grief, he has a slight pain in his shoulder and we are calling world famous orthopedic surgeons? I hope he has good insurance.

You don't see an orthopedic surgeon to necessarily have surgery. You see him to diagnose your problem. He's a doctor specifically trained to diagnose that kind of problem.

And if you have health insurance it might cost ten dollars more than to see a general practioner, who has far less training and experience in orthopedic diagnosis, and who very frequently after examining you refers you to an orthopedic surgeon for his expert diagnosis.

If one has BlueCross insurance one has to see their GP first as they don't want to pay the high price doc unnecessarily.

I would caution against resting the hands if there is no pain in the hands, it takes about a day for hands to atrophy significantly, this could provoke new and confusing symptoms.

Best thing for poor posture is to play in front of a mirror take regular breaks, stand up and sit down again.

If you see a GP he'll want to prescribe, a physio will want to use ultrasound and a surgeon will want to cut. Lots of people with more insurance than sense have had unnessecary and potentially destructive surgery.

'Do no harm', is not really compatible with gravy trains.

At work a plain wooden chair which allows you to place both feet on the floor and where the back is perpendicular to the ground is best. Anything fancy made of plastic with wheels will in fact make you tense to avoid movement, anything which forces you to slouch will exacerbate the real problem which is your neck.

Certainly go and see your GP but be wary of profit based intervention, medication etc.

How active is your physical life, regular walks and workouts ?

Most of all try not to stress and be patient. Better to be cautions than end up with scar tissue from unnessecary surgery or chronic pain from an ill advised hydrocortasone injection ( this happened to me).

All the best

D.

Excercises for the shoulders in the morning and evening wont do you any harm, takes a minute or few. Other than that try different positions for playing.

rickm -> RE: Pain in right shoulder (Apr. 16 2013 19:11:49)

of you locked in a certain postion all day at a computer and then if you think about it when you play the guitar you locked into a similar position its a matter of that joint not enjoying being locked in one position all day. try and vary your position on the computer even using the left hand on the mouse, elevate your arm etc. same thing when you play. find ways to play/work in different postions so that you get some relief from that one position abuse. the human body wasn't meant to be locked in one position for several hours of the day. move around. it might be a strength issue or a joint issue but I think it will improve as you vary the position as you go.
