tele -> Changing frets on a neck with lacquer (Apr. 11 2013 19:37:18)

Hello,

is it possible to change frets on a neck that is finished in lacquer without having to take some of the lacquer off from the side of the fretboard(ebony)? As I am not too familiar with the process but I think the process of changing frets usually includes sanding the fret ends by a tool that also sands the side of the fretboard. thanks

The ends of newly-installed frets have to be filed flush to the edge of the fingerboard, so you would lose some finish there. But it could be touched up invisibly with shellac (even though you have lacquer).
