tri7/5 -> Savarez corum/cristal set (Apr. 4 2013 12:44:25)

I had a normal tension set of these laying around and threw them on my blanca a few days ago because I was out of my normal string set. Let me preface by saying I pretty much can't stand anything in the copper wound bass arena in terms of strings so I wasn't expecting much. However, the corum basses (which I had never tried before) are amazingly warm for a copper wound string. Supposedly this is one of the most nylon sounding copper wound strings made and I would say that's about right. They sound big and clear, almost dark in a way, instead of metallic and tinny. The cristal nylons are nice and bright and have a nice feel to them. Overall the set feels right along the same tension as a D'addario EJ46 set which is about perfect for me in terms of tension.

I doubt this will replace the normal set I play and I expect them to lose their tone as every Savarez set does in about a week (we'll see). But it is a nice set and it might grow on me more. Not sure it's the best for a flamenco tone however, it provides a very angelic tone to my ears (read as "pretty"). I can't seem to get the snap and aggression from the strings like I usually can. Perhaps if I use them more that might come with time.

The new cristal trebles are great

I use those string all the time, they last a lot longer than luthier's and sound a
ton better than DeadAddario's. At least to me, so I always buy them. I know they
have a lot of critics here on the Foro.

Jeff

The brand and type of strings one uses is a very personal decision, depending on both the individual and the guitar. After trying several, I have settled on Savarez High Tension 540Js for my Gerundino blanca, 660mm; and Luthier Medium Tension for my Manuel Adalid blanca, 650mm. In both cases, they are bright and well balanced.

Cheers,

Bill

The Savarez New Cristal trebles are the worst treble strings in the history of Western Civilization.

DeadAddario's.

I see what you did there
[:D]

Can't say I don't agree somewhat even though I play d'addarios often mostly due to their consistency. The corum/cristal are definitely a step up in brightness but have a similar feel in tension.

Good question, why?

The Cantiga bass / Cristal trebles are my current favorites (normal tension). I used the Corum basses for a while and I liked them, but then I tried the Cantiga basses and they felt like they provided a little more headroom. I agree about the nice feel of the Cristal trebles (although that likely changes from one guitar to the next).

I would like to try the cantigas as well, heard good things about them.

n85ae -> RE: Savarez corum/cristal set (Apr. 5 2013 16:53:34)

Just ordered some of the Cantiga/Cristals to see how they compare to the Corums
I have been using. Now just have to explain to the wfe, why did I need to spend
yet another $50 on guitar strings ... :) After all the old ones aren't broken ...

Did you compare these with Hannabach 827's?
Any ideas on nhow these two brands might compare?
