Just came accross a picture of two aficionados that looks as if finally you wouldn´t need taking pains with fretting anymore. [;)]
( At least not with the first three frets or so. ... For EDA it would just need to be a tad longer.)

You get one hand spare. Imagine: Like for accompanying oneself on a tamborine, or for stirring the coffee, or controlling the TV remote.
Carefree virtuousity like you hadn´t even dared dreaming it up under a breakfast tray on a lazy Sunday morning!

Can´t wait to yet see the right hand substitute on consumer level!
´could use that obsolete limb to scratch myself under the chin. - Sometimes, during playing it itches in the beart when the elder mites get entangled in heavy battles for a mint piece of hair scale.

Anyway, glad to see: The times of ol´ practising will be over soon!
( Admitted: Not for the purists, yet.

Those gotta wait until brain liquid injections pass the R&D stage.)

Damn...i'm caught with a smoking gun :-)

I happen to have exactly the same one. It's a german made Guitarola which indeed takes over left hand chording. You still need at least 1 finger to select/hold 1 of the 20 preset chords. Each of the metal clips visible on the front corresponds with a chord. It covers up to 4 frets and works a little bid like the old fashioned type writer. When you press 1 of the 20 metal clips 2 or more mechanical fingers arise from resting position to fret the chord of your choice.

i guess it was inspired by the chorded zither

I remember a very funny scene of Benny Hill using a self made electric fan (probably a modified electrical kitchen device) to play some extremely fast and rhythmical flamenco rasgueados.

Paul Gilbert uses a drill to pick for him while soloing :D

It´s the irony in life how out of all you possess this very device. hehehehe :O)
( BTW; I included one of your conclusions into my fundus, and when I come to there it works out great.)

Two days ago there was a scientific documentary on German TV-channel ZDF that you would had certainly loved to see ( I tried recording it, but failed), BTW.

It contained "time-off tech" ( super slow motion filming that will even include cameray arrays that allow circling perspective like in the movie "Matrix"), presenting some incredible artistry ( 4 mexican brother´s unbelievable salto performance ) and a group of improvising musicians with classical guitars.

The Mexican´s mutual timing and coordination was beyond anything explainable ( according to scientists). Similar with the musicians and their "maybe fastest of all instruments". Scientifically it would be unclear how the performers do align so immediately.

It was said that scientists assume synchronizing of the musicians by facial expressions, and that they would currently be trying to detect timing inidactors in the peformers faces.

- I suppose this to be a weak link though.
I believe, instead of mainly visual clues, it to be rhythmical and melodical experience that allows mutual anticipation.

Anyway, this was one of the yummy docus, and I am certain that you would had enjoyed watching it too.

Back to technologically advanced playing tech.

I do indeed love documentaries like that and always try to see/record them. I knew it was screening but unfortunately choose something else to watch/record. I saw the last part of it which was indeed very nice to see. With a little luck it will be re-programed during one of the terra x marathon nights or on one of the other channels.

Um, the rhythmically challenged breed of scientist I assume. [8|]
