bandurria -> tips on a "simple" humidifier (Mar. 26 2013 0:01:25)

Hello fellows, I got this tip from Salvador Castillo, guitar luthier from Paracho Michoacan Mexico, when I told him I live in Colorado and the air is very dry here. (anywhere between 20 and 40% humidity) and wanted to hear from him in keeping my guitar in a "healthy" humidity range. He suggested to put a damp sponge, or cloth. in a sandwich bag. Tie a knot on the open end, **** it with a fine needle and put it in the case where the diapason rests. This is in addition to the humidifier I need to put for the body. I've been doing it for a while and seems to keep my guitar in healthy conditions. If you try this tip and works for you, great! give credit to Salvador. Or you can also share your ideas on this topic.

Friendly regards.

Years ago, Paco de Malaga (my guitar guru in Washington, DC) gave me the following advice to keep my guitars humidified. Place a wet kitchen sponge inside a plastic traveler's soap container with a top, with holes punched in the top. Place the soap dish (with the wet sponge inside and the top closed) inside the top of the guitar case, under the head. Obviously, the guitar case must be kept in the horizontal position. You only need the soap dish with sponge under the head. You don't need a separate humidifier near the body because the humidity appears to spread throughout the case evenly. I've been doing this for years, and it has worked well.

Cheers,

Bill

I've used Ziploc sandwich bags with small slots, and the soap dish with sponges. Also you can use a thin (1/2 inch) flat sponge in a small sandwich bag and wedge it between the strings in the soundhole. They all work O.K as long as you are carefull to wring out the sponges completely. These ideas have been around for years. . .

Nowadays I keep my instruments in a small bathroom which is kept at about 40% humidity with a cheap humidifier running 12 hours ON and OFF, on a timer. A 3 litre bottle of distilled water lasts about 4 months.

Here in Ontario we really only need it in the winters, when the heating is on, and the house gets very dry. I have not had a guitar crack since using the humidified room.

You will probably find lots of valuable stuff on guitar humidification if you do a SEARCH in the Foro files. . .

Good luck with your Castillo. I like mine very much. . .
