It looks like a crack from the pic, but hard to tell. It doesn't make sense to me that the crack would be so darn dark. Cracks are just wood splitting, not a darkening of the wood, right? So that is a mystery to me. I just inspected my guitar's cypress carefully and saw a couple of darker lines but they were only an inch or two long (not as dark as yours) and definitely not cracks. Aside from the crack - how was the tone on the guitar? Did you like it otherwise? It is kind of cool that you'll be getting a higher level model for a little bit more!

Cracks often go dark if you glue them with super glue (cyano)

Cracks have whiteness...this is finished over. They wouldn't finish over a crack like that. I have seen cypress with lines as dark or darker. The problem is the back is not matched sides so it stands out. Simple test is shine a light through in a dark room, it will be obvious if its a crack or not.

I'm looking at the picture inside the guitar. There's a big knot on the foot and a knot on the upper back brace. The maker was clearly unconcerned about cosmetic "defects" in the wood.

There is a possibility that the back was not completely mirror matched to begin with; like it might have been an ongoing strip that was matched but not completely side by side. I've seen this in cheaper guitars which don't necessarily show being unmatched but not that they are correctly matched as a mirror piece of wood on both sides.. Backs and sides do get mixed up on occasion. I've seen some of the older Conde guitars with mis- matched wood back in the 50's....good tone but not the best in cosmetics.
