Antonio was genius, what a monster, plays so clear ...I think i heard one half fluffed note all night..(and i am not even sure)

Hes got such crazy loud and clear picado

the show...there were defenetly bits i liked in the second half there were some that were pretentious, as you would expect Saura to do

a little too much piano and Spanish songs rather then flamenco for my taste

The musicians, singers were brilliant

Saxaphone!!!! AHhhHHhh! I know you shouldn't hate an instrument but.....I can't help it......

I do love the way Saura films things though, I feel like it should be in IMAX.

Is that the Flamenco Hoy that is going to be on Mezzo tommorrow morning? Ive already set it to record... and after that they will put on the making of or something like that.

acctualy there was a sax part where its just the sax and singers ...kind of question answer sort of thing that really worked, loved that part

too much use of the piano that annoyed me especially when u got Antonio Rey there but the main composer for the show was Chano Dominguez so you can imagine and the program said " additional" compositions Antonio Rey

but everyone knew who the star of that show was, the audience etc...Antonio was the very last to take a bow

There was actually en embarrassing moment on Australian audiences ignorance, the main dancer is a full figure guy that cause of his beard he looks a bit like Jack Black ( he was in flamenco flamenco guajira) he IS a great dancer

Poor guy every time he set foot on stage in silence half of the audiences laughed like he was the comedy relief .." he couldn't possibly be the main dancer' he took it very well and even played with it... but i was so embarrassed, this went on about 3 or 4 times...anyway that all stopped when he did his solo and showed em why...fu*ing idiots

Imagine what their reaction would be at Farruco

Now I gotta see this.

Florian -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 15 2013 21:33:56)

you see him in the vimeo trailer i posted...the guy that looks like jack Black

Leñador -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 15 2013 21:40:00)

Oh I see him, haha, now that you mention it [:D]

I think that Baker Street song made me hate Saxaphone........

Florian -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 15 2013 21:50:22)

also worth a mention youve probably noticed it they all do this thing now where in alegrias the singer dosent wait for the guitar to stop before they come in, a singer mentioned it to me last year ....they start on the remate before, cool...not sure how i feel about it yet, takes a bit of getting used too

if you didn't expect it youd assume singer made a mistake

bursche -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 15 2013 21:56:26)

At first glance I thought how could you possibly see flamenco both hoy and last night...This is not supposed to be a joke, I'm just writing down my thoughts.

Sr. Martins -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 15 2013 22:01:15)

We should meditate on that.

On the other hand, it seems like thats whats going to on Mezzo tommorrow all morning [:)]

Mark2 -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 15 2013 22:54:40)

I saw Farruco dance twice-that guy was so intense looking-I don't remember laughter from the audience, or if they did, they were drowned out in my mind by the guy's presence and resulting explosion.

He struck a pose with his cane, and I probably stopped breathing, and waited for the onslaught of artistry, which followed immediatley.

To be honest: I was probably laughing - from excitement.

Ricardo -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 16 2013 16:15:45)

Oh no, Antonio is using a conde. [:D]

I like how at the end there he stops playing and just looks kinda bored , I know the feeling [:D]

I hope Antonio gets his own gig soon.

tburke -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 16 2013 16:40:30)

Man saw this on TV and I thought that guy was a ****in awesome dancer!, kinda messed people laughed, some facepalm **** for sure. Great show though

bursche -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 16 2013 17:19:07)

Jack Black you mean?

tburke -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 16 2013 17:29:54)

^^^ haha yeah him, mad style and vibes

Ricardo -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 16 2013 17:35:24)

my buddy snagged some footage from sanlucar a couple years back when I couldn't go. I hope to see more of Rey just doing this type of thing rather than big spectacle dance shows so much.

aloysius -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 16 2013 21:58:33)

We went to see it last night. Antonio and the singers were great - especially Sandra Carrasco, I hadn't heard of her before.

The weakest link for us was the dancing. Rafael Estévez was great, and saved the show from the dance side - Ana Morales is a great dancer but for me personally not very flamenco. The other dancers were VERY balletic. There were quite a few baile clásico enpañol numbers, so I guess the non-principle dancers were chosen on their ability to be able to do jumps and pirouettes etc., but when they did flamenco it came out looking very ungrounded. Given the number of great dancers in Spain (and even here in Australia we have great dancers like Ana Otero) I didn't think the dance side matched the calibre of Antonio Rey and the 3 singers. I'm probably over-critical after seeing hundreds of shows in Spain - it was still an enjoyable show and the local audience loved it.

I agree with Ricardo it would be great to see Antonio in more stripped back shows featuring his guitar. He told me his next album has already been mixed and should be out soon - I could easily imagine him touring with his own show before long. Alval and I did a 4 hour class with him on Thursday, which was great. He is a very diagnostic sort of teacher, he watched intently how we did the various rasgueos etc and showed us practice pathways to rectify our flaws. He is an amazing player - for example when he talked about picado he demonstrated Sabicas, Vicente and Paco's picado, reproducing them with their hand position, movement and sound.

Ditto
Went last night ...
I agree with all the comments from Aloysius and Florian though maybe less of the comic relief last night .
I went in there expecting a Saura production and that's what unfolded
The balletic element isn't my thing but the hard work and intensity of the dancers was inspiring....
The staging and production was fantastic
The highlight for me was the siguriyas .. Just cante and guitar..
The standing ovation was a testament to the publics reaction plus the ongoing applause for Antonio clearly displayed the strongest part of the show

I do hope our guitar festival organisers took note for the next programme in 2014

I literally bumped into Antonio after the show
He was really impressed with audio techs at our theatre..
Have to say it was the fullest strongest guitar sound I have heard in that venue..past performances I've heard have been paco Pena, Jason McGuire and yamandu costa..
He Also suggested we catch up today before he flies out to complete a falseta that we didn't have time to finish in our 4 hour course on Thursday
I found him a generous teacher and as Aloysius mentioned very diagnostic of our playing but offering great and sincere positive encouragement
It's been a great couple of days...

million dollar question, i mean i would love it but i don't know that they will have the big act the same guitarist Adelaide audiences would have just seen on the same venue just the year before.

Many of that audience are the same people that come to see the flamenco shows in guitar festival as a organizer I imagine you would wanna give them someone completely different so you don't risk " we've seen that one"

even tho you and i know he could probably do about 6 concerts and not repeat a single thing, it will be interesting to see who they come up with

But man far as I am concerned Antonio Rey is sitting on top of the flamenco guitar world today best thing ive ever seen at the Festival theatre
