aloysius -> RE: Saw flamenco hoy last night by Carlos Saura with Antonio Rey (Mar. 16 2013 21:58:33)

We went to see it last night. Antonio and the singers were great - especially Sandra Carrasco, I hadn't heard of her before. The weakest link for us was the dancing. Rafael Estévez was great, and saved the show from the dance side - Ana Morales is a great dancer but for me personally not very flamenco. The other dancers were VERY balletic. There were quite a few baile clásico enpañol numbers, so I guess the non-principle dancers were chosen on their ability to be able to do jumps and pirouettes etc., but when they did flamenco it came out looking very ungrounded. Given the number of great dancers in Spain (and even here in Australia we have great dancers like Ana Otero) I didn't think the dance side matched the calibre of Antonio Rey and the 3 singers. I'm probably over-critical after seeing hundreds of shows in Spain - it was still an enjoyable show and the local audience loved it. I agree with Ricardo it would be great to see Antonio in more stripped back shows featuring his guitar. He told me his next album has already been mixed and should be out soon - I could easily imagine him touring with his own show before long. Alval and I did a 4 hour class with him on Thursday, which was great. He is a very diagnostic sort of teacher, he watched intently how we did the various rasgueos etc and showed us practice pathways to rectify our flaws. He is an amazing player - for example when he talked about picado he demonstrated Sabicas, Vicente and Paco's picado, reproducing them with their hand position, movement and sound.
