Yeah Blue Moon is one of the house beers here with or without an orange slice.

That is my fifth maple guitar, but I'm going to do it much more now. I'm a believer, I saw her face.

Ryan, I'm glad to hear you'll be participating. [:D]

Sorry about the recording, I blame the shochu. I can't wait to hear with both of you do with your respective guitars.

Guitar sounds and looks great, maple huh..........that's pretty interesting, I like maple.....Jasons playing, of course supernatural as usual, my only critique.........Blue Moon?????

I forgot to tell you, Jason is in LA this weekend doing Fanny Ara's Juncal show. I'm not sure where the venue is, but I bet it is near Santa Monica. And what is LA annyway if not a super speedy 405 freeway to boost you around town at mach 4 rocket speed? [:D][:D]

Go check it out and say hello to him.

Leñador -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (Apr. 19 2013 0:33:10)

Nice thanks!! I'll have to do some investigating, my lady takes lessons with a good friend of Fannys, she'll prolly know.
405........ugh..........I'm gunna die on that freeway, or the 10 more likely.....

Leñador -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (Apr. 20 2013 7:56:49)

Unbelievable show, Fanny and Manuel are insane and just never stop. Jason played a bulerias that just completely melted my face and is ridiculous the whole time. Anyone in SD tomorrow absolutely has to check it out.
They brought the funk too every once in a while which is something I've never heard before and definitely did not hate.
Oh yeah, little tokyo is not near santa monica Stephen! [:D]

Hi guys,

I was hanging out with Stephen last weekend for the final time before he leaves for Japan, and I made this brief video demonstrating his last guitar shortly after initial string-up. He's already left, and I have no idea when he'll have internet access again so I'm posting the video for him.

I must say, I really liked this guitar. Stephen described it as traditional-sounding. Here it is:

Leñador -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (Apr. 24 2013 23:23:59)

Ole Stephen! He gots some skillz [:D]
The guitar sounds great too, definitely my style.

estebanana -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (Apr. 28 2013 0:12:37)

Thanks Juan for putting that together. That guitar had been strung up 30 minutes when you filmed that and I was at the end of a 20 day in a row rush to finish and pack for Japan. Looking, feeling and playing in a haggard way.

One thing for certain, I need to spend some quality time with Dr. Compas now that I have a few weeks vacation. It's good once in a while to see how much you suck to motivate you to practice.

More when I can get to the internet. Again thanks Juan, keep making your videos and photos.

No prob Stephen. I thought you sounded pretty good, actually. *shrugs* But anyways, hope it's going alright for you in Japan. [:)]

Stephen,

Your final guitar sounds great. Have you packed your tools and shipped them off to Japan yet? Enjoy your vacation. You've earned it. When do you plan to depart for Japan? Let us know how things are going after you settle in. I'd love to visit you and your lady at your place on Kyushu someday. Don't be surprised to see me on your doorstep.

Good traveling, amigo.

Cheers,

Bill

estebanana -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (Apr. 30 2013 0:44:25)

Bill,

We've been here for a week, my tools will arrive in three weeks. Our vacation starts today. it is "Golden Week" in Japan, a few holidays crammed together to make a week of national holiday. I've mellowed considerably in the last few days as I'm not under the gun to produce. Getting acclimated to the town of 25,000 on the edge of the East China Sea; I'm THE only non Japanese person here. Kind of special, but also kind of odd.

As for the food, Oh my goodness, I'm in heaven. We went to an izakaya two days ago and the ladies who run it looked at me and asked Yuko if I could eat non western food, she said oh yes he can eat. The meal was a seven course blitz of local seafood beginning with boiled snapper ovaries. The first course was fine, I think Scandinavians eat fish ovaries...the sashimi here is fresh, I mean fresh. We had several kinds and it was interleaved with savory egg custards and vegetables.

There is a breakwater which protects the two river mouths and the Old Port and New Port sections of town. There is a large fishing fleet and the break waters that protect the harbor extend half a mile out to sea. They provide a great place to fish where you can catch squid, aji ( horse mackerel) and lots of tasty ugly fish like cabezon, not sure what they call it in Japanese. The fish markets here put anything you've ever seen to shame.

We went to the A to Z store, a big corporate store like Costco that sells everything from cars to cabbage under one roof. The sad phenomena around the world today of the mom & pop stores getting pushed out by these mega stores is happening here. Still it is rural here, with much more natural land than in other parts of Japan. The countryside has both open grassy meadows and low mountains full of pines. There is a lumber yard back on the highway coming into town that has some Cypress like lumber which I will investigate soon. There is also a preserved Samurai home open to the public about 20 clicks back and a hand maker of feudal style battle helmets, he sells mostly to the film industry.

In an hour or so we leave for an over nighter to a ryokan, country inn, with hot springs and more food. Once we get the wifi working when we return I'll take some pictures about town. It's difficult to slow down and de stressify, but I'm resolved to do it....ahh hot water...

The times I flew to Spain, to Madrid, to catch the AVE south I always said "Ok this time the taxi driver will not get the better of me fare wise" They won every time. Well Japan has its "highway" men too, but not taxis, Solaseed Airways nicked me for a 100 bucks to carry on my guitar after it was confirmed by a phone call it was under the maximum size. When we boarded the flight was half full, and the over head bins almost twice as long and deep as my case. I was less than amused, and the Japanese flight attendants were so smiley and polite as they strapped my guitar in next to me, giving it the window seat no less, saying it was safer and better for all. It took me 15 minutes to accept that I can't do anything about it. I remember a similar bus trip in China 20 years ago. I guess I'm not in Kansas anymore.

Stephen-
I really enjoyed reading your report and I look forward to more. Right now I am craving sushi for some reason. Maybe you can find me a girlfriend there.
Best wishes,
Ethan

Yes come visit. Even Anders would like it here. Plenty cute girls, but I'm not supposed to see that.

TANúñez -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (May 1 2013 12:52:01)

I wish you well up there Stephen and look forward to more of your videos but with you wearing stylish Kimonos.

estebanana -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (May 1 2013 23:47:33)

The Dude abides wearing the kimono drinking the shochu.

constructordeguitarras -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (May 2 2013 4:40:26)

I hope you have a dehumidifier for your new shop. It must get very humid there I would think.

HolyEvil -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (May 3 2013 0:12:55)

I'm glad you are having fun in Japan.
I love Japanese food, girls, technology and the whacky game shows.

All Japanese food except for this.

I went to Yamada appliances to look for a dehumidifier. I have not found the one I want yet. The sales man was your usual flim-flam man despite all the trappings of the polite Japanese manner. [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Hagimaemashite , may I sell you some honorable crap?

Dude, how long are you planning to stay again?
I'll miss you, but wish you well.

You may want to get some new tools there.
The japanese steel can be quit good.

I am headed to Japan as well. I will be stationed on the Yokosuka Naval Base for 2 years. Maybe our paths will cross some day. I cant wait to explore Japan.

HMMMM, you're in the Kanto Plain area...hmm, I'm sure we will cross paths, be careful of the Japanese women. Next thing you know......

nickmontez -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (Jul. 15 2013 13:54:32)

I've hear that 2/3 of military men end up with Japanese wife. We shall see abotu that... :)

Where do you get your luthier supplies from in Japan? I am thinking about ordering some wood here during my last few weeks in the states. Would it be worth it to order here or just wait to purchase while I am in Japan?

estebanana -> RE: In progress: Last guitars before leaving to Japan. (Jul. 16 2013 0:43:58)

Order it in the states a bring as much as possible. It's more difficult here, although being in the mili you may have more friends going back and forth that can bring you things.

There are much, much worse things that could happen to you. [:D]

Japanese wives are more respectful about how they nag you;

"Honorable husband please take out trash now and clean toilet, and do it very fast please, or else I make sashimi out of your hot dog."

You should drop down for a visit when you have time off. I'll help you with any guitar making stuff I can. There's a long time gaijin guitar maker in Hokkaido who is really a fine builder named Jim Freison. He is a really nice guy and likes to chat guitars & flamenco. He might be up for doing some paid teaching. You could learn a lot from him. I'll show stuff too if you bring me peanut butter, tortillas and beans from the commissary. I'll give up some good info for a bag of groceries I can't get here.

Sounds like a plan! I wish there was a luthier around when I was building my number one. I am deciding if i want to build two or three more while in Japan. I learned so much building number one that I can't resist building a few more. I am for sure going to build a blanca and am still undecided on the others.

I was planing on posting pictures of the entire build here in the luthier section but steadily forgot to take pictures toward the end of the build. I would work long days in the shop listening to flamenco on Pandora and get carried away working and forget to grab my camera from the other room. [:(]. It still needs some work but I as I stated before, my travels have seperated me from my tools. it is playable just the neck is a little to thick and I have to plane in an angle into the fingerboard to get the proper string height over the sound board. I guess I didn't put enough of a neck angle. All in all it is nothing I can't fix. I would have corrected it already had i had the extra fretwire to redo the frets.
