Francisco -> Flamed maple sides (Oct. 18 2005 10:04:08)

How would flamed maple affect the sound of a flamenco guitar? I'm looking to place an order with a luthier (not commited yet, but am considering placing with Anders) around mid '06, and think I may go with a blanca with pegs, and think some flamed maple sides would look awesome.

How would the flamed maple affect the tone? How would it affect the price? I haven't seen this wood used much for flamenco guitars. I realize it may be due to the fact that i don't get out much, but why don't you see it very often?

Flamed maple has always been used in the building of flamenco guitars. Many builders had it as top model. It looks fantastic.
Personally I'm not so fond about the sound characteristics. It's a bit more "plinky" than cypress, but makes good strong trebles. I prefer the more earthy and lyrical sound of cypress.

The extra price depends on the luthier and the quality of the wood. In my case 150 - 200 euros extra. It's a pain to bend because it simply falls apart if it's to wet. (but that's not your problem[8D])
