Morante -> Best accompanist for Agujetas? (Feb. 20 2013 18:43:58)

Is any one of the modern hot shot guitarists capable of accompanying Agujetas well?

mezzo -> RE: Best accompanist for Agujetas? (Feb. 20 2013 20:02:52)

Antonio Moya might do the job.

estebanana -> RE: Best accompanist for Agujetas? (Feb. 20 2013 20:10:20)

I saw him sing two years ago with a young Jerez guitarist who name escapes me at the moment, but I thought he did a good job. He was a hot shot, but he did not let hot shotism get in the way of Agujetas' cante'. He pretty much stayed in a Jerez groove and did couple of spectacular falsetas in siguriayas.

I would not want to see Agujetas sing with any more than that as accomaniment. If you can find them where are a few vinyl recordings of David Serva accompanying him in the late 70's early 80' which are wonderful. There are something like 6 or 7 siguriyas on one album. In the Bay Area we pass around CDs made from old records that have not be rereleased yet, and one friend of mine made a few CDs of this recording. A few years ago this record of David and Agujetas came to light in some one collections and I was lucky enough to receive a CD. I have to say I prefer it to the recordings Agujetas made even with Moraito. The problem is I wore out the CD playing it so much. I need to beg another one and get it on my iTunes. If I could do that I could share it with you.

Manuel Valencia is the only one I've seen with Manuel. (Perhaps that's who Estebanana saw as they performed together a couple of years ago in the US). I like him here with Dolores.

Antonio Carrion, Antonio Soto have accompanied well but can we count them as young hotshots, I guess not? Has Antonio Moya accompanied? I imagine he would be good.

Be interesting to see Miguel Salado, El Bola, or even Jesus Losada or Juan habichuela nieto. I suspect Diego del Morao knows how to if he chose to. In the mean time, could call on Dieguito Agujeta.

I saw him with Antonio Soto.

Yes I saw him with Valencia. Moya - Agujetas seems like an odd marriage, I can't quite hear it in my head, but I would buy a ticket to that combo any day.

I can't believe we are actually talking about flamenco! Or are we?

Flamenco is about string brands, over priced vintage instruments and $F guitar grades right? I am confoosed now. [;)]

I saw him last year in Berkeley with Manuel Valencia.

Valencia sounded pretty legit - old school falsetas and such, but his volume was way too low. Most of the time the sound was just 'plink plink plink'.

That show had something like four Fandangos libre (grande?), and no Bulerias. I kept shouting 'Valencia!' to try to get him to wake up, but it didn't work.

Manuel Agujetas is on film stating he prefers to sing palos other than bulerias (I think it's in Rito y Geografia).

el carbonero -> RE: Best accompanist for Agujetas? (Feb. 21 2013 13:06:27)

i agree, manuel valencia is really great tocaor,i saw with agujetas, and it was good, because manuel know to adapt with cantaor.

this cantoaor is not easy to acompanar,if you dont know his cante.

one times i saw agujetas with a virtuose guitarist, this guitarist had the worst night on his life,he was incapabable to do the work.

But dont forget, agujetas is the number one,and no necessit, one bicho de guitar.
just one who know play the chords at the good moment.

In his disc, for me the best is with parrilla.the disc with curro de jerez is good too.

I think Jero could hang with him - ferocious toque for a ferocious cantaor.

Manuel Valencia accompanies him on the Jerez Al Cante recording.

I'd love to give it a shot. Here I am with his brother who sings a similar style-Solea, siguiriyas, fandangos, Romances we did em all that night for some hours:

The problem is I prefer to listen to some bulerias rather than four fandangos. [8D]

That's awesome! He looks like a better looking version of Agujetas [:D]

About 20 years ago, Dolores had a son that played guitar very well. He must have been around 13 at time time. Anyone know if he still plays?

I just noticed that the 2nd video in Orson's post above has Dolores' son Diego on guitar. Anyone know if he is an active performer?

NormanKliman -> RE: Best accompanist for Agujetas? (Feb. 22 2013 7:13:02)

I like Enrique de Melchor's accompaniment on 24 Quilates. Sounds like they did it in a few afternoons.

I think it was less than 20 years ago and I think he's still accompanying her most of the time, but I don't know much about him.

jimand -> RE: Best accompanist for Agujetas? (Feb. 22 2013 7:20:55)

Thanks Norman. I can't keep track of the years, but I think it was around 1994-95. Dolores's son was hanging out at the Fundacion in Jerez learning falsetas from watching Tomatito videos. He played well back then. I always wondered if he kept at it.

I listenned to Hija del Duende for the first time in ages recently and, I don't know what state of mind I was in or which way the stars and the moon were lined up, but it hit me real hard as the most moving cante I'd ever heard and the accompanying of Agujetas Chico was perfect. Puro!!

Here's a bit more Dolores & Dieguito

and Dolores with Agujetas Chico.
