I know the buleria is the state of the art for dancers, but I love the solea's. That what I spend most of my time playing etc. Dont necessarily know why, maybe because its slower, but seems like I can relate better.

that's not true... bulerías is special for guitarists, but in dance, there is nothing more difficult than a soleá...

Solea's are the "mother" of flamenco. They are the deepest of "Cante Jondo." I love Solea's as well, and they are what I most enjoy playing. Of all the palos, if I had to choose one and one only to play. it would be solea'. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful. Cheers, Bill

the soleá dance has lots of changes in the tempo...from extremely slow to extremely fast, you have everything... it's not difficult technically as it is to capture the aire of the palo... i've been accompanying here for years and noone has ever asked me to accompany por soleá (until last week :))...i only once did soleá in a workshop done by someone from Granada...

i am...the scene here is really small... two really good guitarists have moved abroad to make a living, and there are about 3-4 of us left here who play at an acceptable level, but i'm the only one regularly accompanying cante y baile... there are many dancers, but the picture is the same, very few perform the way that makes you "olé"...in fact, the two best ones are classy dancers, but they have both moved to spain, they come home a couple of times every year to perform... there used to be flamenco clubs held here, but not anymore...too little interest, and even if there's something, noone's willing to participate out of shyness or lack of confidence etc...

It is more typical for dancers to do solea por buleria or alegria if they are not advanced. Siguiriya slow is also tough like solea. THe most advanced I saw is Taranto as you must interpret free form cante to compas and requires a more advanced understanding both of compas AND cante structure to interpret well. Set choreographies almost never work exactly right if you change musicians. Ricardo

I've heard of one other flamenco guitarist in the area and two or three dancers. The dancer whom I'm starting to accompany is really good -- much better than I am as a guitarist. But I'm looking forward to the challenge and hope to help give flamenco a little more visibility in my new city.
