Using ring finger for cierre? (Full Version)

Maybe another dumb question, but;

although I was never taught this years ago, I recently began using upward strokes dragging the ring finger across the top three strings ( 1 - 2 - 3) for those triplet cierres in Soleares and Seguiriyas, as opposed to using an a-m-i arpeggio for the same effect.

I was just wondering how common is this technique, and if it is considered 'good' or 'bad' technique? Or doesn't it matter anyway, as long as the effect is O.K.?

Ami will be better. Practice p (rest) on E string then ima back to mi on 123 strings.

If your doing it to drag it like a pick it's fine, except your A finger is for the high e sting anyway so us it, but if your looking for power the M finger could work in certain circumstances.

Paco Peña onces experimented with playing an alternative picado were fingers stayed on string/gliding from string to the string were possible. Although his speed increased quite a lot he rejected it after a while because he didn't like the sound. I have no idea how common your solution is (never use it myself ) but if you feel fine using it and like the effect i wouldn't care to much if it is "acceptable or not". Manitas de Plata used similar moves with impressive results.

I dont understand what you mean.. can you tape it?

It is common to pull 2 strings with a (meaning 2 strings with a and then 1 string with m then 1 string with i.) within an a m i arpegio, if you mean that.

1. Don't know how to make an audio clip and post, but I'll try and figure it out?


2. No, Doit. What I meant is playing those fancy little triplet arpeggios in a cierre, using only the ring finger stroking upwards across three strings, from 1st the 3rd. string. With practice it sounds pretty smooth. Smoother than using the three-finger reverse arpeggio ( i,m,a) to get the same notes.

Ah got it. Yes, thats old style.. Sabicas used that a lot. but its somehow outdated. If you feel good doing it like that, there is nothing wrong with that.

Sorry Doit, got it backwards.

That quote should read: " three finger reverse arpeggio ( a,m,i ) ".

NOT (i,m,a). But of course you knew that already. .

I'm not sure whether its an outdated technique. I've seen a recent video of Ricardo when he used this technique, and it was the firet time i saw it done that way. I've started using it to replace some of my pimami occasionally, due to my index finger problem.

When I don´t use it,..its outdated. That simple.

Yes. That's it. Stroking up with the ring finger across the top strings. There's a good example at 0.40 secs in the video.

Than mathematically it must be included at 0:04 as well :-)

What i (and HolyEvil) mend to say was that the same technique also occurs in the 4th second from above recording :-)
