I hope this isn't going to sound stupid, but, how does one know if they are at the intermediate stages of playing?

Is it by how many palos one learns or learning a lot of technique?

Thanks,

Kalo

to me you become intermediate when you know the basics of all the palos, and all the techniques used and are ready to build on them and widen your horizon...
obviously you're no stranger to the compás anymore and the question is not how to play a certain technique, but how to play it cleaner, faster, with a better tone...

Leñador -> RE: Beginner vs. Intermediate (Feb. 6 2013 19:36:36)

I think it's a gray area. Some people are obvious beginners, some people are obviously intermediate and then there's people like us, from what I remember of your sevillanas video we're probably in the same level more or less. I think some people would call us beginners and some people would call us intermediate. It'd make things easier if there was a belt system like in ju-jitsu. If we had to pass some test with some crazy governing body of spaniards or something [:D]

Curious to see what the flamenco black belts think.

Maybe a qualified teacher could identify beginner vs. intermediate...

I believe it was last year that the foro had a beginner tangos challenge...I learned it a couple of months ago....I play it to Doctor Compas and other Tangos loops..I stay in compas and my techinque is good..

However, like xirdneH_imiJ, stated, I would like to play it CLEANER, and faster or whatever Tangos speed is played at...

And yeah, Leandor, I learned Jason's Sevillanas in Taranta key and can also play that in compas as well.....

I've learnt the basic Solea and want to expand on learning more...And can play it in compas....

Thanks again for your responses!!!

Kalo

everyone is a beginner to a master. intermeidate? what does that mean? means you can sorta play? Im thinking this resembles a bell curve, beginner very small population at the bottom, intermediate as the largest group in the middle and master a small population at the top. There are 15 million great guitar players in the world and maybe a hundred masters. will most of us ever see that/ how many of us can play in the nfl?

Interesting question. In Spain "intermediate" probably means you can accompany most of the main palos proficiently. Beginner would be learning compás and advanced would be playing solos or expert accompaniment.
For most foreigners its a little different, we tend to compare ourselves to other foreign guitar students and it's mostly based on technique.

For example on this Foro I'm probably considered an "intermediate" but in Spain I'm an absolute beginner compared to 90% of guitarists there.

What I'm thinking is some qualified teachers might call someone beginner and others might call someone intermediate.

I like what Deteresa says, it's a different can of worms in Spain. If someone can only accompany 2 letras they're a total beginner no matter how many Paco falsetas they can play. Then how many letras do you need to know?? Prolly depends on what maestro you talk to.....

OMG, I am total beginner then [:D] Well, I would be happy to play cool falestas and compas...I am on my way, I understand the importance of staying in compas and learning [:D]

One thing I don't think I can acomplish is accompanying SINGERS[:o] Well, maybe its because I am a beginner[:D]

I have these online notes from a teacher, would be good education for me to hear comments from senior members.

...As a flamenco guitarist, there are certain forms you'll be expected to play...some forms show up all the time and some almost never show up...

Beginning-level dance class: Tangos, Soleares, Bulerias. You should know how to play these, know their llamadas, and be able to recognize the dancer's cues.

Intermediate-level dance class: Tientos, Alegrias, Guajiras, Solea por Bulerias, Siguiriyas. You should know the changes in tempo and changes from section to section, and able to recognize their cues.

Plus group pieces: Rumba, Fandangos de Huelva, Sevillanas

Advanced solos: La Cana, Tarantas, Farruca

EXCELLENT!!!! Very nice point to know where to start!!!

I learned a Tangos, BASIC Solea! I would love to build more on those two styles before I would learn a buleria [:)]

Thanks flyhere for sharing this great information!!! It is always difficult to know where one should start!!!!
